I received a call from an organization named American Homeless Veterans.
They solicited a donation and I asked for more information because I smelled a scam.  The provided a tax ID # on the brochure so I checked it out and the legitimate Veterans organization located in VA.

    Beware of these people.

I'm glad I read Bob's blog about the American Homeless Veterans.  I also received a call from them.  I decided to check them out and could not find a website with any information.  I will not be sending a check.

Called for a donation to Homeless Veterans.  I pledged $27.00.  I researched their charitable Organization listing on both The Chairitable Listing Organization Site and the IRS Site, The Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau with no results.  Needless to say, I will not be honoring this pledge to this fake organization. Gave EIN as 54-1847890.

01Feb'09 received solicitation via phone (thought OK) 21Feb'09 received envelope (questioned because of LOCAL funny address) Mail Handling Facility, PMB 359, 1818 N Taylor St. Suite B, Little Rock, AR 72207-4637, but their paperwork lists 210 E.Broad St., Suite 202, Falls Church, VA 22046 as their location; sent small check 24th to local address (via window envelope) THEN today 27th at 8:45am got a call from a male asking IF I'd sent the check. RED FLAG!! Checking on internet, found this sight.  Called local VA   My bank will charge me more to cancel than check is worth. Bummer

American Homeless Veterans is actually “Circle of Friends for American Veterans”. I was able to connect this via their Federal Tax Exempt tax number “54-1847890”….

They are listed on most state government sites as “Circle of Friends for American Veterans dba American Homeless Veterans”… Notice the acronym “dba”… The “dba” stands for “doing business as”, need I say more? This is why it’s hard finding good information on this outfit.

If you decide to donate, only 15% of your hard-earned money with actually be going to the Veterans!!! So, looking at one dollar, only 15 cents goes to the Veterans and 85 cents goes to the company!!! What a rip off!
Well, now you know… Check with your state government website on “Charitable campaigns in your state”.  Find out how they have it listed on their site.

    Good luck  :)

I too, recently pledged $27 to this organization, and something didn't set right with me, so I decided to check them out.  I had just written a check, but didn't send it, and found this and a few other blogs about them.  I tore up my check and they will never see a dime of our money.  Thanks for the information posted here.

I received a call from American Homeless Veterans.  I told them I couldn't guarantee to honor my pledge of $20.00 until I check them out on a charity evaluator.   They said fine and sent me the brochure and return env., etc.
I am glad I came across this site and obviously won't be sending a check.

They said they were American Homeless Veterans and went through a speech about helping the veterans with PTSD. I told them I was a Vet and I asked to be sent information before I would give anything. They transferred me to someone who wanted my credit card info. I refused and asked for a mailing. They wanted a commitment over the phone. I refused and said I wanted their web address so I could check them out. He said the url was americanveterans.net which I searched for and found no such site. As soon as I said I would not commit until I checked out the site, he was in a hurry to get rid of me. Then I found this site and had to report them.

I also received a call, and what I thought was strange was they asked for my debit card or credit card number to provide a donation right then. This upset me and got me to thinking something is not right. The lady on the phone gave me the VA address but when I received the donation pledge paperwork in the mail it said Greenwood, IN. This also struck me as strange because we used to live in Indiana (20 min from Greenwood) and I don't remember this place.
I did not send them any money.

I suggest that u check out Vetvission.com and Kidswishnetwork.org they are all represented by Charitable Resource Foundation they are registered with the Better Business Bureau and if you pledge money u should send it it is a great organization 66 percent of the money goes to the vets I know I work for this company and we work hard to get pledges from people to help out and when people like u don't send ur promised checks it takes away from the charity they spend 250,000 mailing out those pledges every year. so please if you promise to send money send it why take away from the charity if you can't afford it don't promise to send it then back out that's just plain wrong

This is a great organization I work for them. Their home office is in Falls Church, Virginia. They spend 250,000 mailing these packets out every year. They are registered with the Better Business and 66 percent of the money goes right to the veterans. Don't promise money and not send it because of the look of an envelope. My God, if you make a promise keep it. We are doing great work with veterans and with children that have cancer. Just because their envelope doesn't look good, my God, why does that matter? Should we spend more money on the look of their products or spend it on the charity that it was meant to help? You people need to get educated and quit being paranoid. That's what's wrong with this county is people like you that pledge money and then don't want to send it because of an envelope. My God, grow up. If you are to broke to keep your promise, just say so and don't promise to help when u can't afford to do so anyway.

    Dear Everyone,
I evidently received the same exact phone call and pledge letter that most of you said you recieved. There was no phone number or website on the letter which made me suspicious also the logo was close but different. So I went online and found no info on them but I found this bulletin board... Thank God.
I read all of the posts ahead of me and I am convinced that American Homeless Veterans based in Greenwood, IN. P.O. box 7001 is an outright scam.I intend to honor my pledge, but I will send it to Vetsvision.org. I will also send their letter ahead with the explanation of where I sent that pledge. I assume they will be happy that the vets they work so hard for and for whom I thank, will get that money.  Thank you for the information.

Angie, Brenda and Helen must be very close comrades if not the same. I have a few words about your comment "You people need to get educated". -These words were taken from your message: PROMISS,VETVISSION,REGISTED,BUREU,PLEDE,VETERNS,CHARRITY,REALY, WHREN,ENVELOP,and MENT. Now who did you say needs an education? Also you directed people to wrong website. It's www.vetsvision.org. At least get that right!
