Did not answer original call, instead called the number that was on caller ID and after several rings got an answering machine saying I had reached American Relief Association.

I have been getting calls for some time now from "Unavailable" #1-866-221-5508. It is the American Relief Association for helping Native Americans. I have asked to be removed from their call list, but have not had any luck. Finally I went to their website and emailed them a few times to try and get the message across. On the "Contact Us" page they ask for your phone number, but I did not hesitate since they obviously already have my phone number and use it frequently! Good luck!! I used to get these calls 2X a day, everyday for over a year. I refuse to answer if the number is not one I recognize. Finally blocked them.

We have been receiving calls from the American Relief Association at 866-221-5508 for the past month.  No one responds when the call is answered and no one answers when we call the number.  Since they are a non-profit, they are not legally required to abide by the National No-Call-Registry or to keep an internal Company-Specific no-call registry.  Nonetheless, it can be argued that as citizens with a right to privacy, if we make a request not to receive further calls, it should be honored, not only as respecting our right to privacy, but also as a good business practice, so as not to annoy someone who is a potential donor.

One recourse is to lobby for a change to the FCC ruling to the effect that non-profits must also keep and adhere to an Internal No-Call list.  Send such requests to fccinfo@fcc.gov.

One can also send a letter to the non-profit requesting that they voluntarily put them on an internal no-call list and notify them that if they continue to call, that you will contact the FCC requesting that they require non-profits to maintain and adhere to internal No-Call lists.  One could send such mail to the non-profit using a USPS Certified Mail Receipt and selecting the Return Receipt fee on that form and also filing out the Domestic Return Receipt form to provide a record that they received your request.

Yes R408 everything you say is true. The unfortunate truth is that telemarketers have found new ways to continue to harass you. Since "charities" are exempt from the Do not call list, the TMs have contracted with many charities, some legit some not, to do their phone fundraising for them. Sounds good when the TMs have guaranteed to give
a certain amount to the charity BUT after that amount is reached, the TM
gets most of the money beyond that sometimes 70 to 80 percent. If you want to give to the charity do so directly. If these TMs are bothering you then you should sign up for their Internal Do Not call list. If they keep calling after that you can sue them for large amounts of money.

My mother used to donate $10 a month to this charity just so they'd stop calling her every week.  By doing this she rduced the frequency of calls to once a month.  On the day she died in 2006, they called.  I told them she had died that morning and the caller then insisted that I make up for the loss of her $10 monthly donation by sending money myself.  It takes a lot of nerve to demand money at a time like that!  I said no.  They have been calling me weekly ever since asking for my mother.  Each time for the first year I told them she is deceased.  After the first year I started telling them they have a wrong number and to stop calling me.  Now I have caller id and I just pick up the phone and immediately hang up.  What a nuissance!

I have been getting the same calls for days.  I guess I've decided to take another route to the problem.  I continue to call the number back, several times a day and of course it goes to voicemail....... SO i just let it record the background noise of my home for about 10-20 minutes at a time, filling up their voicemail.  Lets all do the same, maybe they will get the picture.

Yep... quite a different # than the 5508 # on caller ID... I think this is 3 brothers who my spouse busted after contributing to, finding them extremely NOT truthful on their soliticings of how much donations they passed on to Native Americans... THEY only pass on a tiny amount to the native americans...  anyone can dig and find the truth out about American Relief [***] business practices. ...the website is even hokey and links do not work...

and they STILL call here after they were busted. what they are doing in AZ is not illegal.

No one on  the line when I answer the call.  Caller ID shows "unavailable"

call came in to my (212) (NYC) phone line about 12:15 today (Sun 05-Oct-2008). They hung up before I answered and before it would have gone to v-mail.
I'm on the DNC list.

Calls received everyday, sometimes 2,3, 4 times.  Number may belong to American Relief Association, a bogus and/or shady "non-profit" to avoid the DNC list.

I will be filing complaints with the FCC and the Arizona State Attorney, as they are located in Phoenix , AZ.

I get this caller at least two times a day, I am unemployed and will not help these people. I want them to stop calling.

These people call constantly, at all hours. On 3/18, they called 9 times. I have been hearing from these people for years. It's definitely a scam, and moves from state to state when they get caught (at one time they were in S. Dakota). They periodically change phone numbers. I have no suggestions on how to get rid of them, just to hope they get put out of business.

I guess they change names a lot because now the answering machine (never a live person) says they are "United States Humane Charities."  They have been harassing me with multiple calls (4-6) a day for over a year now.  Since I started documenting it in August 2008, they have called well over a THOUSAND times in spite of repeated requests/demands to remove us from their call list.  Their callers have hung up on me more times than I can count, and some callers are very rude.  I've left multiple messages on the answering machine but have never received a return call.  I've also left demands on their answering machine telling them to stop calling us -- that hasn't worked.

My latest attempt was to send a cease & desist demand email to the email addy on their Web site yet the calls continued.  I followed that up with another email with details of the subsequent calls and notifying them that I thought I'd certainly be able to substantiate that their calls have far surpassed the level of harassment, and I'd be taking civil action requesting a penalty of $100 for each call.  It's been 26 hours since the last call, which I think is a record!  I'm not holding my breath yet . . .

4-6 calls a day listed unavailable and with no response when answered. Duation of this is about 2 months now.

Repeated calls from this numbers asking for monetary donations to the four corners indian reservation.  Calls sometimes happen 3-4 times a day.  I've asked to be removed to no avail.
