i was told to call this number, i dont know who they are but they say i own on a payday loan. i do remember doing this not to long ago but with what i see on the new i dont trust them what should i do?

Called me through an unavailable number. The guy told me there was a case pertaining to my name and social security number and to call the number and give the case number I was given.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Received a call today as well. It was from an unknown caller so I let it go to voice mail. When I checked my messages I was told that a fax had come through their offices stating that a claim had been filed against me and that I would be served papers within 24 hrs to home or business but they would not come out today (shocking!!). The man (Steven Smith) stated that I needed to call the Department of Legal Services in order to stop it going to the courts. The number was 866-232-6960. Did not say who filed the claim but he had my name and last 4. This happened before and I paid due to not having anything like this before and never been in any trouble. Wish I had read the other comments first.

Today is December 31st, 2013. At 5:30 pm, I received a call today as well. Te call was from an unknown number. The caller left a voicemail stating that a fax had come through their office about a claim that had been filed against me. The message stated that I would be served papers within 24 hrs to home or business but they would not come out today. The caller stated that I needed to call the Department of Legal Services. Well, I say, if they believe they found someone they are looking for, then come see me and stop giving me heads up.

received a call from this number on MY cell phone asking for my husband. They scared the crap out of me by saying he had to contact "their legal department" and that "they would be out to serve him tomorrow either at home or work". Total nonsense after looking at these other posts.

I received a call on 3 Jan 2014 at 3:25pm to my cell phone voice mail for it was an unavailable number. The message reads: This message is intended solely for my name was stated and that the person calling was named william peters, liaison officer and was contacting me about  a fax notification received in their office with my last four of my social number . He also stated that a process server would be at my residence in 24-48 hours if this matter with CashnetUSA was not taken care of immediately. The message also stated if you wish to prevent further proceedings of this matter or have any questions or concerns contact department legal services (866-232-6960). It gave the case number was 20156-965b and said to contact them at that 866 number, thank you and good luck." I called the number back because I had done business with cashnetusa years ago,but not recently and I knew that I did not have anything outstanding with them. I told the gentleman William Peters that I have never received anything correspondence from this company and asked him to fax me what he had which he said had been faxed to him. He would not answer my question about sending the file he had to me and I told him I will check my credit report and call him back.  He told me to call him back on Monday with documentation proving that this claim had been cleared up otherwise the process service would come to my work or my home to serve me papers for some kind of fraud.

Please read the articles in my post above.. this is a extortion scam! Do not call them back, report them!  A fax is not legal proof! Real Legal servers do not call either..

Exact same style call - and content - from "Stanley Smith" calling from "Unknown" number to my government agency work cell phone number. Same information and instructions. Will be doing NOTHING on this.

Also received a call to my home phone stating a restraining order was being filed against me and to call a certain number within 4 hours or else. Call came in near midnight. Yeah, right. I'll plug that number in above to see who is doing that one.

Got the same call yesterday! First was from a process server trying to locate me. First time ive EVER heard of a process server letting people know the are looking for them. Called the number she gave me 8662326960 and was given the same speach as everyone else. In the middle of contacting the police department

I received a call from this number tonite saying they received a FAX and gave me my last 4 ss numbers.  They said the name of the company but I couldn't understand.  The case # was 810361 and they threatened to come to my place of employment or home.

Some woman called on my cabin phone. I check messages there on occasion. Looking for a Tony or Toni Henderson saying something about legal documentation and using the wife's last four SSN. Case # 560630........Said I need to call CCR and Associates at the 866-232-6960 and if not they would be out tomorrow and to have proper ID ready..........This is too funny. Good luck getting to my cabin, hope they ride deep powder rocky mountain snowmobiles and are expert riders..........All the details are going to my daughter as she is a Captain with the County Sheriff's Department and her husband is the District Attorney. Yep, they called the wrong house this time....................

got a unknown call from william peters from the legal dept about a compliant had been filed against me and to contact brakeman and associates 866 232 6960 to get more details about the 2 cases pending against me. ... case number 697-632B. scam

I got the same story but the call was for my son who has not lived here for 18 years.  But first I got several automated messages that had a computer saying his name, then one spelling his name, then a live person on voice mail today.  The name of the caller was Tracy Moore and she claimed to be from the liason's office and papers were going to be sent to our home and his work place if he did not call 866-232-6960.

Those are texts- there have been prior texts as well I've deleted; and they also call all the time! Despite being told not to!
