I did get a bill in my windows live email.  They say the comapny they are from, but they don't know who I am, nor do they know the company I"m from.

They called my office and left a message (loudly...as if she was personally angry at me) for my boss about charges being filed against me...They lady was very rude and called herself a "locator". I have been getting calls from this woman for a while...I call the 866 number and ask for documentation of the debt (three times now)...I have never rec'd any. All they want is for me to send them money. Finally, today, I was so angry I told them that my lawyer says go ahead and file the "Charges"....

Make a complaint with attorney general office in California. You can do it online. They are using illegal collection practices. Try to note names and times and save messages. They call your job' your family even when you answer the phone and claim to be a law firm. Fight back.

I asked for written documentation on what the debt was and the original company I owed money to. They stated that I should have already had this information, and refused to provide me with any paperwork. When I said I would be more than willing to resolve the debt, they verbally presented me with 3 different payment plans, and immediately asked for my bank account information. I requested my payment option to be sent to me in written form before I would give them my bank account information. Again they answered "We don't do that, we will take your payment information now, collect the debt and, before your last payment is deducted, we have a recorded phone call confirming the last payment, and a letter is mailed stating that the debt is paid in full." That is great and all; but I need written documentation of the [payment plan for my own records BEFOREHAND. They flat out refused and argued with me that they did not have to provide that. I told them I am sorry but I cant just hand out my information without something in writing. The jerk I was talking to stated "Ok ma'am, I can't help you any longer since you seem to be set on trying to handle this on your own accord." I told them that they were performing unscrupulous collection practices and ended the phone call. Two days later, I have received NO more phone calls from them or the locator trying to get my address "to deliver papers". WHAT.A.SHOCKER.

They will continue and please do not make payments to them they will rape your bank account. Make the complaint with the attorney general for illegal practices. They lie and misrepresent law enforcement. Once you make them any kind of payment the statue of limitations runs out. Dont let them bully you. No matter if people make mistakes or not they have no right to break the law. Hold out for the original creditor to take it back and work with them. These people are lying, not abiding the law. They will continues call your family and call you and threaten you are going to be arrested for check fraud. Please make your complaint. I called them back and disputed them and the supervisor hung up on me 4 times. Then told me I was harrassing her. I said how does it feel?

I also just made complaints with The Federal Trade commission finance dept and the BBB.

I recieved a letter from the Attorney General stating do not give these people any money over the phone. Also the FTC is in the process of investigating this company.

This is a scam. Do not give them any money. They do not have any documents and are not going to file any claim against you. They buy and sell information. The original creditor has already charged this debt off. They have been reported to the FBI.

From the descriptions in the posts here, it certainly seems as though the caller violating the FDCPA, and may even be a total scam.  But the mere fact that an original creditor wrote off one of your debts is NOT ENOUGH to extinguish your liability on the debt, itself.  And when a debt becomes legally uncollectible, you are going to have to include the amount of uncollectible debt as income on your tax returns.
