got a voice mail today. no call,  just a vm. they said a debt i had discharged when i did chapter 7 was still eligible for criminal prosecution and if i didn't resolve it immediately they'd go to the state district attorney.

i called my lawyer, who said that's crap and not to worry. ten minutes ago i got a text message from text@searchbug.com saying "your lawyer called. bankruptcy discharged. will be contacting the state attorney".

needless to say i called my lawyer back but he's at lunch. wondering what he'll have to say about that

Received a call from (866) 571-6131; person indicated that they were possibly filing criminal charges with my states' attorney general.  They had my name and obviously my contact number, which is a work number.  The person then wanted to "verify" that I was the right person they were speaking with and attempted to verify my last four numbers of my social security number, which were actually NOT the last four numbers of my social security number.  When I identified myself as an investigator, which I am, the person immediately hung up the phone.  When I called back, another person answered and when I attempted to obtain the person's name, who represented that they were a supervisor in the company, the person hung up on me too.  BEWARE...... THIS IS A SCAM!!!

This "company" called my mother-in-law numerous times looking for my husband. When he called, they threatened him with criminal charges for writing a bad check, that did not exist, since he has not written a check in over a decade. He immediately mentioned he is contacting his lawyer, and she (Brittney Brown is the name given, I believe) got even nastier with her threats, and hung up without attempting to collect info. I immediately smelled fraud when they claimed criminal charges for a non existent check they had no information about or previous attempts to contact. Hang up and call your bank (in this case, my husband doesn't have an account with the bank they claimed). NEVER call a number received by voicemail or email, claiming to be your bank or collections. Call the number on your statements or checks.

If someone writes a bad check, he'll hear about it from the payee or the bank.  He or she is not going to learn about it from some debt collector years after the fact.  A caller attempting to collect on a supposedly bad check years after the statue of imitations is passed , is  pretty good evidence of a debt scamming operation.

Get a real job & stop trying to defraud people for non-existent bad checks. Then you wouldn't be so worried about people catching on to the fact that you're a scammer & a fraud.

Total scam.  Debt collectors have nothing to do with the criminal justice system and have no influence on it.  Being n debt is not a crime and you cannot be arrested for it.  Do not call them back.  Ignore and block.

    Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection  (Threatening arrest or criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act)

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.  If you can find them.

    ️ DON'T BOUNCE CHECKS...AND YOU WANT GET A CALL

But that's exactly the complaint -- they DON'T bounce checks, yet extortionists and criminals like you STILL call and threaten them.  So your premise is demonstrably false.

And brandishing a phone is no different from brandishing a gun in this context.

    Idiot.

People are getting calls for debts they don't owe, belong to someone else, were discharged in bankruptcy, already paid and the SOL has expired...

    Thanks for playing.

I just received a call/voicemail from this number but I didn't answer. They left a message and I couldn't tell if it was recorded or live person. I called back and I was told I wrote a bad check for a payday loan that I never had at an adress that I haven't lived at for years. They tried to scare/intimidate me saying the attorney general office will put out a warrant for my arrest. This is garbage and I don't scare easily especially when I know I never even had a loan
