I called 1 866 587 1775 number since was advertised as Microsoft Support which I needed cause my PC got infected. They pretended to be from Microsoft tech support and charged me $199.99US to clean up my 3 PC from infections. Also tried to sell lifetime protection for those PCs for $499. The name appearing on the screen was My Tech Gurus, Inc. Later they sent me a confirmation emails. Apparently they exist in UK, USA and Australia.

On March 14 I got a call from someone who claimed to be calling from this number (don't know if they actually were) with a similar scam, pretending to be with Microsoft.  I'm in Toronto and was told by a computer support person that the main aim of the scam seems to be limited to getting credit card payments over the phone. Because of the above message I was able to confirm that they were a scam, so thanks for posting this record.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's my account of the exchange to 'info@antifraudcentre.ca' :

    Hello Anti-fraud Center,

On March 14 ~ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm I spent an hour on the phone with someone who pretended to be from Microsoft, offering extended warranty on their security software.
While I wouldn't usually fall for this kind of thing, I let this East-Indian, who called himself Logan Hobbs when pressed for a name, & gave his employee number as 0786,
remote access to my computer by downloading AMMYY. The reason he was able to convince me that there was some corruption of MS software was because I'd just bought a new computer with new MS Windows 7 & Office 2010 on it (& registered it online in the previous week), and was actually having trouble with that machine (password & getting it to work with very old non-DVI monitors) when he called.

I later did an AVG & Malwarebytes scan which came up clean, and checked that MS Security was still on, which it was. While he had remote control of my machine he was able to make the screen image jiggle and over-write what I'd input on Google to check to see if this was a phishing attempt. I also stupidly told him that I had an Excel document on my desktop with all my passwords recorded (not itself password protected, it now is).

I'm assuming that this phishing attempt was primarily to get a one-time credit card payment over the phone for their bogus extension of MS security (this was the opinion of one local computer support person I spoke to), and not a deeper identity theft. I will change my email password, & have considered changing all my passwords. Please let me know if there are any other step I should take,

    Thank-you,

I also had a similar experience with MyTechguru.  Tried to get a credit card number to charge $119.00 to clean up my computer that they told me had a virus.  I hung up, but they had remote access to my computer also.  Stay away from this company.

This 1- 866-587-1775 phone number from fraudulent individuals who present themselves as microsoft
support are nothing more than scammers who prey on others to steal their money or their identity or both.
I called that number yesterday after doing a search on Google looking for a microsoft contact. The man with an east-indian accent said he could help and then said that he would transfer me to another person but the more I think about this now, he was probably the same individual with whom I was exchanging information on the phone. After a few minutes of questions/answers online I noticed that he had gained control of my computer and Lord only knows what he would have done had I not shut down. Turns out that my problem was a simple click of the mouse.

PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS GROUP... I only hope that wherever these scammers operate from that at some point they will get arrested and thrown in the slammer where they belong.

I was also sucked in by this company yesterday. I had bought Microsoft Office for my laptop 2 days before and then (because I'm useless with technology) called what I thought was a microsoft helpline. They remotely controlled my computer for two hours - seemingly to download Office for me (they "extracted" files - hope that's not sinister) and then tried to charge me $100. I told them I was making a complaint to Microsoft UK and they cut the connection. I then called their offices in the States and screamed at them. Not sure what to do now. I just hope that them trying to scam me for $100 is the worst that they have done.

These people are scam artists.  Who knows what they download from your computer.  Same as above, they made my screen jiggle, told me I had a "Loop Virus."  I have no doubt they got everything from my computer.

Worse yet, is that who knows what information they took (passwords, etc.).

Also, shame on Microsoft for not contacting GOOGLE to stop this.  This company (mytechgurus, inc) appears to be Microsoft on Google, even says they are Microsoft Support, then after taking over your computer they ask for $119.00.

    I am going APPLE...

Got sucked into it too... I am usually very wary of these things.  as soon as they started asking for money, i said get off my computer and email me a record of our conversation.  he said we cant send any info until you give go ahead.  he said you have a huge virus (even though my computer was brand new).  when i questioned him and showed him that windows defender said im clean, he said oh they just sell you those things to make money.  i said hey isnt that connected with your company (microsoft) he said no.
i copied and pasted our chat and he went and CLOSE that windows file with the chat.  so i copied again but when i pressed paste, it said f**k so i knew sthing was really up.  i told him get off my computer NOW! and he started closing all my programs.  i called the company and they said sorry - but they did say theyre not associated with mircrosoft.  anyways having a tech coming over tonight to check that everything is still in order.  i called them ps because i thought i was calling microsoft support

I bought software from Avanquest to repair my pc.  When I wasn't able to load the software I called the customer service department.  They said they had to transfer me to their technical department.  All along I thought I was talking with Avanquest technical department when in fact it was my tech gurus.  They tried to sell me a 3 year contract for computer repairs and told me that I would not be able to load Avanquest software that it would not work and that they could fix my computer remotely.  I refused to pay the absorbent amount they wanted so they offered me a one time fix of 39.99.  I paid it.  The technician didn't do anything but keep my mouse in the corner of the screen for most of the 3 hours I spend online with them.  When I complained to the email they sent me, another technician called me the next day.  This time they asked what I was having problems with.  I told him that I was currently on facebook and having the same problems as I had the day before when I talked to them.  This technician did absolutely nothing for another 2 1/2 hours.  When he asked if I was still having error messages on the page, I said yes. He told me not to worry about the error messages, could I play my game.  Naturally I didn't know yet cause he still had remote control of my computer.  When I received a call to ask about the software I purchased I naturally assumed it was Avanquest.  I explained my problem with the software and then I was finally told that I was speaking with my tech gurus.  I expressed my dissatisfaction but the man with the heavy indian accent said ok cause we are going to close this.  That was all I've heard from them other than being charged the money.  When I tried to call them and tell them that I was dissatisfied I was told that they fixed my problems and that I could have 15.00 back.  What a scam.  I spend money to have nothing done except have to sit in front of my laptop for 2 days 3 hours each.  STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!

Had a problem with Windows Live Movie Maker earlier this morning. I Googled the number for Microsoft to try and ask them what was wrong with the program, and accidently got roped into this stupid company. After granting technician "Robert" (He never even gave me a last name, pretty unprofessional for a company to do) remote access for about 20 minutes and watching the "technician" do absolutely nothing for the entire time (It even took him a good five minutes to reply to a question I had when his response was only a four letter word and he was obviously not doing anything on my computer at that moment), I realized that I wasn't speaking with Microsoft. I told the technician that I didn't want to continue the service nor did I want to pay for the "repair service" (I told him I didn't have money to do so). He proceeded to pressure me into paying, saying things like "The charge is just a small fee of $49.99". I repeated that I did not have money nor did I want to pay, to which he said "Ok, so can you afford $39.99". I immediately disconnected the session without replying.

After searching and CORRECTLY finding Microsoft's real number, I spoke with them for about an hour. They told me that more than likely, they attempted to and possibly succeeded in hacking my system, and may have even installed a virus of some sort. They advised a system restore, stating that it should fix any potential threats, and that if it doesn't, I can opt for a $99 premium plan with Microsoft's REAL virus team(Better to pay $99 once with the legit Microsoft than pay any amount to My Tech Gurus and then have to pay later to repair what they did).

After restoring my laptop, I proceeded to call the two different numbers that MTG lists as their phone number(Two numbers, not suspicious at all!). I've been hung up on, lied to, yelled at by a manager for saying that they are a scamming company, and told LITERALLY the EXACT same story by every person I've spoken with. The conversation tends to lean towards them saying, "I can assure you that we are not a scam company, you can visit our website at www.mytechgurus (They never seem to know how to say '.com') and see that we are legitimate company as scammers do not have websites. Our remote technicians cannot hack computers that is simply impossible (LOL, ok, too bad it's very well known now that remote controlling is a growing form of scammers hacking into computers)."

The most interesting phone call had to have been the one I just got out of. The lady I spoke with (The first three times I called their 1775 number, I got the same guy each time) told me all of the above, and then said the phrase "we do not deliver outgoing calls to anyone" when I never even said a SINGLE word about them making outgoing calls to people. Guilty concious? Slip up? I don't know, but that's fishy! Also, when I mentioned to her that their "technician" tried to beg money out of me, she said something really interesting: "So are you saying you're ready to accept the charges?". What the heck?!

Microsoft even admitted to me (Three different operators at that) that My Tech Gurus is a huge scamming company, don't trust them. They aren't even accredited with the Better Business Bureau! The jokes on them this time though. Not only did they not get my money, but they tried (And possibly succeeded) in hacking a 21 year-old boy's laptop. I have NO personal information on here. What are they gonna do, steal my pictures of Ke$ha, my inbox messages to my girlfriend on Facebook, and my iPod music? Oh, dear God, no! LOL. Suck it.

MTG is probably still spying on me right now, and if they are, here's a big [***] YOU to you, My Tech Gurus. This company is exactly why Americans have racist tendencies towards call center representatives. Stupid Indian [***] trying to hack our computers. Get a life dude.

Had business with this group. Needed help after running a restore--lost my printer driver. Went to HP's site and fruitlessly spent three hours before giving up. Got this company thinking it was MS, hoping to recover the driver and also MS Office which was also lost. They said they could help me with their staff of professional computer experts if I signed a year's support contract for $249.99. Figuring I was out at least that much if I repurchased Office and a new printer, I agreed. Then I spent five hours the first day and four the next watching three successive experts control my deaktop and repeatedly run through the same sequence that had brought me no success. I pointed this out and I finally asked to talk with the operators superviser. A supervisor called, apologized for the inconvenience and said they would refund my money. Yet to be determined whether this happens.

They tried to tell me my 2 week old computer was in serious jeopardy of crashing and they wanted to sell me 119.00 for a one time fix or 199.99 for a 2yr discounted. My optical driver was not grabbing or reading on my alienware and I called a dell associate to see if this was a hardware problem. My tech gurus, inc was not associated with Dell. BEWARE!

yes i blame google for this problem. they had mtg's ad in the side bar and it made them appear to be microsoft representatives, which they are not. i allowed their "tech guru" to control my pc to fix an issue. as soon as the chat came up, he asked for my information, which instantly made me cautious. then after i questioned him about it, he then decided to tell me there was a fee of $99.00. lol of course i denied this and asked him for all of his information, which i know is bogus. i recorded the chat and researched the company. the better business bureau says the director's name is mr. james sanchez out of greenwich, ct. so mr. sanchez if your bogus business wrongs me, im coming for you!!!

[***] almost got me. I thought I was calling my PC company's real tech support. I got suspicious when the bottom feeder I was talking to began trying to convince me that his tech had diagnosed my problem based on the minimal info I provided, but the issue was not covered under the warranty. What a crock!
