Scam!  Accused me of owing a payday loan before I even had a bank account!
If they call you, call the credit bureaus and freeze your credit! Be careful! Do NOT give them ANY personal information.

This is (one of many) criminal extortion scams that have been going on for years. Many are operating overseas and out of the reach of US law enforcement, while others are operating within the confines of prison cells here in the US, using contraband cell phones. Others are using VOIP. Either way, they are able to disguise their identities and locations, making them next to impossible to prosecute. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting victims' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

They started calling my phone last night and asking for my husband. Demanded his SSN#, which he refused to give, would not tell him who they were, what the call was in regards to and threatened him with a lawsuit. We don't owe anybody anything so we know this is a fraud. They have called my phone twice today.

First the guy answers when I called by  saying "Hello".  Then he says with an  odd accent (Indian?)  that they are Stark Recovery, located in Bakersfield CA.   No further information given.

There is no "Stark Recovery" listed in the records of the Secretary of State of California.

However, something called "Stark Recovery" has a long history of debt scamming.  Their callers are seriously bad actors and into serious debt scamming.

If they call you, block and ignore the calls.

    Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection  (Threatening criminal prosecution [or any oppressive threats or harassment ]to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act)

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them .

Called and left voice mails over the last week with a claim number. Called back and said they were with "Access Processing" for a payday loan I took out in 2012 for $450 that was not paid back. Offered to settle for $620. Told them payday loans were illegal in Georgia, so problem #1. Told them I didn't ever get a payday loan from them. They had ALL my information.

They have called me several days in a row asking for my sister. I told them to remove my number and they demand another number for her. I refuse to give them any information about her and told them they need to stop harassing me.
