Had a few calls from this number with no one introducing themselves - just dead air. Called the number back and found out that it is from Videotron Cable Company in Quebec which made sense as I am in the process of setting up a subscription to their services.
In fact, this is common with most companies using automated dialers to call clients. The dead air is only temporary and an agent should come online after a couple of seconds. as there are many mentions about this and also the fact that most "dead" calls come from the synergie office, i have gone ahead and reported this to our dedicated team. Thank you everyone.
There is no agent waiting - the calls actually get dropped from the Videotron end after 10 or 20 seconds. I can only assume that they are using their own phone-over-cable technology, and it fails when it tries to connect to my cell phone network.
I'm glad I'm only trying to sign up for their television service...
Got call from 866-697-3405 and a woman was singing a middle-eastern type of song. I kept saying "hello" and after her song she said "yes, madam" and the line became dead. It is so creepy.
Working in a company which make dialer software/hardware, i can tell you that the dialer automatically hang up after a few seconds (15) if there is no agent available to take the call. That only happens if they have a predictive dialer software which start to call before an agent is free in prediction that one should be free in a few seconds.
They must be using a very bad algorithm of predictive dialing :)
