Company called Coastal. They said they wanted $ for an account from Advance America closed 6 years ago, and said they weren't a collection agency. Hmm. Called them back to get their address and info and repeatedly got hung up on. They haven't called me back.

Follow the steps in what you need to know. A legitimate debt collector agency should not have a problem with giving you a real business name and address you can google and verify via google street view, BBB etc.
For extortion Scam Operations, file reports with the FBI, your state attorney general and Department Of Justice,FTC & FCC..

I agree! Wow they also said they wanted me to pay $900 over the phone ONLY to save me a federal court cost of $1500. I don't know much about the laws concerning debt, but I do know it's not a federal offence (unless its bank fraud). I told them that I wasn't giving them money over the phone to send me a bill through the mail and I'd investigate it. They declined, said it was too late for that. Then they returned my call and wanted my address. I declined since my address hasn't changed in 10 years. I figured it should be on file :)

Threatened to take me to federal court for money owed for a debt in 2008. Funny thing is, my credit report is squeaky clean :) scam. Wanted money over the phone (now) or else i would have to pay $1500 in court cost. I told them send me a bill and id investigate its validity. Then they asked for my address. Should be on file since they we taking me to court. Hmm then said they couldn't send me a bill (it was too late for that) hung up on me when I asked for company info or website. Search  Coastal collection scam. Don't give the people money or any info!!!!!!!
