- nicole| 6 repliesdid you ever talk to these people? i've been talking to them, but i'm getting a little suspicious and i wanted to know if anyone has dealt with them before.
- WVnondebtorI have no outstanding delinquent debt/my credit is pristine/my score among the highest.
Even so, I received a threatening voice mail message to my home from this number from "Hope Martin". This company is a debt collector trying to find one of my relatives who has not lived with me for over 7 years and for whom I have no legal obligation.
This company goes by various names including Global AG, Global Attorney Group, RFA and RF & Associates. Most recently they are going by RFA/Reliant Financial Associates and their address is 501 N Golden Circle Drive - Suite 210 Santa Ana CA 92705.
In the message, Hope threatened legal action involving the seizure of my home, a blatant violation of the FDCPA since I am not the debtor. It's also my understanding that it's a violation of the FDCPA to leave such a voice mail message on someone's asnwering - including the debtors (although I am NOT the debtor).
I already reported this company to the Federal Trade Commission. Everyone should do the same....maybe the FTC will finally go after them.- Caller: RFA/Reliant Financial Associates

- Angel| 23 repliesI don’t understand you people. Whether they’re debt-collection agency or not, that’s their job to go collect the money owed from debtors. If you’re not a debtor and you got a call from them then just call back and let them know it’s not you. If you’re a debtor then you shouldn’t even complain why debt collectors go after your ass. Be a responsible citizen and pay up what you’re owed. I heard too many ridiculous complains about debt collectors making harassment calls when knowing that most complainers are debtors themselves. If debtors take care of their debts then there wouldn’t be any harassment now would there. Learn to take care of your finances and stop overspending and whining definitely not going to improve your credit report.
- NoName replies to Angel| 8 replies@Angel: "You people"???!!! Seriously....."YOU PEOPLE"???!!!!! What a joke!!! YOU and your "people" wouldn't have the slightest clue what is means to be "RESPONSIBLE" citizens. You debt collectors break every rule in the book to get what you want - you act like the rules don't apply to your ILK. Debt collectors are idiots.
- Angel replies to NoName| 7 replies@NoName: think on about what you're saying.
>> "you debt collectors break every rule in the book to get what you want": First of all I'm personally not a debt collector and I believe that you need to understand that the debt collection agencies don't go after debtors to get what they want but rather to get back of what was their. Isn't their rights to take back what's once borrowed?. I'll give you a reasonable answer to your question why they break rules to collect debts. Most debtors often refused to pay back the money owed and/or never intended to return the money borrowed at all. I definitely wouldn't let it slide if someone refused to pay me back the money they owes me.
>> "you act like the rules don't apply to you": I thought perhaps you should know that there are rules in borrowing something from someone too. (here's an example if you're too narrow minded)...#1 rule of borrowing things: RETURN THE THING YOU BORROW TO ITS RIGHTFUL OWNER. Apparently these rules doesn't apply to debtors once they decided to not pay back what they borrowed. So tell me why should debt collectors recognize these rules when debtors (probably one like yourself) doesn't recognize it.
>> "debt collectors are idiots": So from what you've told me and what I understand. I already figure out who's the idiots here.
DEBTORS: putting themselves at risks of getting lawsuit and having agencies on them with constant calls. Causing stress, frustration, and issue to their friends and families. Ruin their credit report that might be very useful in future purchases like car, house, and other things.
DEBT COLLECTORS: refused to let debtors have the easy getaway and find ways to take back what debtors owes. Trying to stay ahead of the game of cat-n-mouse that debtors seem to enjoy doing. Finding solution to help debtors clear their credit report if allowed. - NoName replies to Angel| 4 replies@Angel: You act like the money you and your ilk are attempting to collect (using, by the way, every illegal/unethical/abhorrent method you can come up with including impersonating law enforcement officials) was yours to begin with!
You and I both know that's not the case. You and your ilk (and you can say you're not a debt collector all you want but if it walks like a duck......) are just bottom feeders....buying up charged off or old debt for pennies on the dollar. So don't tell me you're taking back what was "once borrowed" .....like it was "once borrowed" from you personally!
You've just admitted that the way you "find ways" to "stay ahead of the game" is to break the law. I think it's very clear to everyone but you who the idiot is. - bob replies to NoName| 3 replieson july 9 i received a phone call from the sheriffs dept. saying i was in the process of being served with papers and that i needed to contact the attorney that is dealing with this case and they gave me the 866-764-9779 number i had to give them 200 dollars a month and they dropped the suit does this sound realistic to you guys
- bob replies to boband now i called the sheriffs dept. and asked them about it and they said they had no idea about it and that they had no record of this
- Collector JoeHey Guys, I actually am a collector, and I won't lie about that. This company should be put out of business, they give all of us a bad name. I promise, we are not all scum, but these people violate the law just for kicks. Get after 'em!
- P s| 1 replyI got a call from the "Sherrifs Department" at work and they told me they were going to my work to serve me some papers. I could call this number and maybe avoid the humiliation of having this happen at work. I googled the number and got this site. My co-worker told me that I should post.

- Aggiemom| 1 replyI received a phone call from the district court in my county, from a man who said he was with Legal Claims. He told me I was being served next week with court papers. I asked him from who and for what, and all he said was "RS & Associates" (maybe he said RF & Associates). He told me I could call this same number 866-764-9779 and gave me a reference number. When I called, the lady launched into a long conversation telling me that I was being sued for "intent to defraud a financial institution" and that the principal I owed was $4500, but the company they represented was seeking $7700 in judgement. I finally was able to cut in and ask her who was supposedly suing me. She said it was Citibank, on behalf of Paul Harris Company. (Paul Harris was a department store here in the Houston area that closed up at least 7 or 8 years ago). I did have a credit card with them, but it was a very low balance card, like $300 or $500. I have had no one conctact me regarding this, and completely forgot about this. I did not acknowledge that I owed any money. She said she had to record the conversation for Texas laws, and proceeded to tell me they were not a collection agency and she was not an attorney, but that if I went to court, they would seek the full judgment. She said if I could work out a settlement with them, they could stop the processing of the papers. I started to get suspicious by this time. She said if I could pay 60% of the principal, about $2900, that the company would be willing to do that. I asked her how much my payments would be, and she said I would have to pay 1/3 in 2 weeks, and then 1/3 a month later and the last 1/3 a month after that. I told her sorry, I don't have that kind of money, and I don't think I owe that much. I thought I had paid that card off. I asked her why I had not gotten anything from the company, a collection agency or them asking me to pay this if I still owed anything. She said she didn't know, it was just their job to get the papers served. She knew who I had my insurance and another credit card through, who I banked with, and that I used to have a car loan with Chase, because she asked if I still had that asset (the car). I told her no, I paid that off a few years ago and sold that car. She said they had an affidavit from my credit union stating that I had financial history with them that qualified me for litigation. She stated, again, that they were not a collection agency and could not authorize a payment schedule, but if I could pay this amount they could stop the processing. I told her I did not have that kind of money right now. She said that it would just have to go to court then, but they would seek full judgment of $7700. She said that is how the credit cards get consumers, they let them go for several years while the interest and fees build up. I think she was trying to make me feel like she was legitimate. She said the burden was on them to proved I owed the debt, but that if I did, they would get judgment for the full amount and then it would be between me and the court and if I didn't adhere to what they gave me for repayment, I could be arrested. I called the number that first called me, and it is the voicemail for the Court Coordinator at the district court, and I checked their website, and that number is there. But all day I only got her voicemail. I didn't call the main courthouse number and ask. I did call my credit union, and they told me they would never acknowledge to anyone that I banked there, unless I gave them permission, as that is against their policies.

- KATHY J DUNIGAN| 1 replyYes, I received a message from a woman who did not leave her name only saying I was being sought as a defendant in a case and not even what that was but if I did not return the call within 24 hours it would be like me saying cmon and serve me and gave this number. I immediately called it and a kid who said he was a student litigator for R.F. and Associates was looking to settle a $300 limit credit card of 2007 saying as of today the payoff if not court bound was $1889.00 but they would settle for $1100.00 plus. I have not heard from this card company in any way certified letter or their own offer to settle in 3 years and then this kid who called himself Andrew Taylor extension 831 calls and said (really pressured) me into a $523.00 settlement to be paid from my father's debit account on the first....he kept bringing up other bills I owed and had paid off and threatened to put a lien on my home, even! $300.00!!! How did he know about those? I know it is illegal and in no way would the one credit card know this stuff he also mentioned 2 other small bills I still owed and asked if my county taxes had been paid yet ... Where did this come from? Sounds like a hack scheme job to me and I will immediately delete my dad's account as this is so deceiving had me scared to death but I think I saw through it most of the time he had so many quick practiced comebacks even chastizing me for not keeping up on my credit report (repeatedly). Guess it checks it enough for me. Please do something about these guys now!!!!!!!!!

- Anonymous replies to KATHY J DUNIGANThis company RFA aka RF & Associates buys up old and discharged debt for pennies on the dollar. Then they legitimately pull your credit report which lists ALL your current and old debt and creditor's names/addresses (credit cards, loans, etc) going back 7 years or so. Your credit report also can include the names/contact info for your relatives and the addresses where you've lived over the last 7 or so years and various forms of your name (Deborah, Debbie, Deb) that you have used. Every consumer is entitled to a FREE copy of this report from each of the 3 credit reporting agencies once a year (go here: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp). Don't make the mistake of signing up at any other site that requires you to enter a credit card # and for which they'll eventually start debiting your credit card). If you get this report, you'll also be able to see the companies that have requested a copy of your report - and RFA's name and address will be on there, along with the date they accessed your report.
So that's how RFA knows so much about your current financial situation. What is NOT legal is the tactics they use after they get your credit report. If your debt is more than so many years old, it probably has been discharged but if you make a payment - even a small payment - they effectively have gotten you to renew the debt and start the clock running again.
Tell RFA (or any collection agent/agency) that before you do anything, you want them to validate (show proof of) the debt. They are required by law to do this in writing. Typically RFA finds it too much work and they move on to easier prey.
The FTC and the FCC regularly read these forums and HOPEFULLY if enough people complain about this company's unlawful tactics, the feds will take action and shut them down. - jalwethis company called my work and said I was being summoned to travis county court monday. First off you can not summons someone to court over the phone, you have to have something in writing. Give me a break, not stupid.

- NCM| 2 repliesSo, my mom received a call from a "process server" today saying I was getting subpeoned to appear in court. After asking my mom where I was and telling her he knew my name and my current address, in a threatening way, telling her he was trying to serve me these papers and I needed to call RF Associates. I called them, and was told by Andrew Taylor at ext 831, after he chose to lecture me condescendingly about why I have the debt, that a lien could be put against my house. He knew what we bought the house for and what is owed now. He also said they could garnish wages to get this taken care of for a credit card I did have a while back, but like the others, had not gotten anything from them in a while. I believe the credit card was for around 300 and now, according to Mr. Taylor, it was apparently $4300. He first told me he could stop the process server if something could be done. Then when I asked if there was a payment arrangement, he told me yes, for 1740 and I had to make the payment today and he could stop the process server from coming to my house. (after he kept asking me if I signed anything from the server which I did not - the server has yet been to my house) He then threatened that he would garnish my husband's wages because I am not working (full time college student) and because, HE SAYS, Texas is a common property state, they could do that. It just seems weird, not legitimate. Because at first, he said there was nothing that could be done. Then when I asked what I could do to keep from going to court, he said Oh so you want to voluntarily take care of this account? Well of course, who wouldn't. I told him I would have to talk to my husband and he said well I can't hold the account or the subpeona so you are taking your chances. I don't know if it's okay that he threatened with the whole lien thing, even going so far as to say the bank would sell our house from under us and they would take our equity. He also said they (not sure who THEY was) would pull our past 2 years tax returns (not sure what that has to do with anything either). And then the whole garnishing my husbands wages, WHICH, he is military, so I am not sure he can do that either. The card was not even in my husbands name. He threatened they would go to my work (which I told him I don't work) and then he said well your school, basically implied they would embarrass me. I know in Texas there are stricter laws about debt collectors, but has anyone else had this happen to them? HELP!!

- Dianne Nelson| 1 replyMy uncle received a call like this from Thomas Miller at 866-764-9779. He was told they were serving him with papers and that he owed $17580. They would not tell him who the original creditor was. Originally they called everyone in the area with his last name trying to get information on him. The original debt was a credit card that my aunt had. She passed away in March and the calls started right after that. She had been making payments to a different collection agency and all of a sudden RFA started making calls. When RFA was contacted the calls were directed to Hope who set up a payment plan with my uncle and he has made 3 payments totaling $2500. When I found out about this I was skeptical but my uncle still made the payments. I have been trying to contact the original creditor and have discovered that the note was sold to over 4 different debt collectors. It appears that RFA is one of the companies who may own the debt. The original debt when signed off with HSBC was $7010. The payments made to the companies evidently didn't get credited to the bill and an ungodly amount of fees has been added- over ten grand. This is ridiculous. The company is hard to discuss anything with other than payment arrangements. They had told us they would send us information on the debt and did not do that until I stopped payment to them. I am not sure what legal leg my uncle has to stand on and truthfully he wants to pay the debt but they want him to pay amounts he cannot afford. If someone knows where I can find legal information on this please post. I know that Pres. Obama has some kind of debt reduction plan in place... has anyone used this??? I have received a fax from RFA listing their address as 17602 17th Str. Suite 102-110, Tustin, CA 92780 Ph 8667649779 and fax 7149233859, it is signed by Julie Chi Director of Operations.
