I received a text message to my cell phone stating:

Free text Msg: Citi Cards Fraud Dept needs to talk with you about activity on your account.  Please call 866-842-1359 ASAP.  To Opt-Out reply STOP

As Citia Cards does not have my cell phone number and have never texted me in the past it is safe to say that the text message is fraudulent.  (that and the fact that letting users opt out of fraudulent activity communications is not a good business practice)  I don't know who the number belongs to, but its a safe bet that it is not legitimate.

This morning I received this same text as "thinblueline" did, sent from "70650":

Free text Msg: Citi Cards Fraud Dept needs to talk with you about activity on your account.  Please call 866-842-1359 ASAP.  To Opt-Out reply STOP

Looks pretty suspicious/fraudulent to me, too, particularly given that Googling the 866 number doesn't return any Citi-related sites.

Just kidding -- I actually just called Citibank customer service (using the number on the back of my card, not the one from the text message), and they confirmed that they did indeed send the text message.  They were just concerned about the legitimacy of an overseas purchase that I'd made.

So I guess that means the number given in the text message (866-842-1359) must be a legitimate Citibank number -- maybe it's the direct line for their fraud department, or something.

I got the same text message and I called Citibank too.  The number 866-842-1359 is indeed a legitimate number of the Citi Fraud department.

Also got the text message sent from "70650":

Free text Msg: Citi Cards Fraud Dept needs to talk with you about activity on your account.  Please call 866-842-1359 ASAP.  To Opt-Out reply STOP.

Called the number on back of my card and was immediately transfered to the Fraud Alert section of customer service.  They wanted to confirm some overseas charges I had made earlier in the day.  They also confirmed that they sent the text message.  The number is legitimate, but you can always call the number on your card to be sure.

Oh, and I posted my number on the internet one day earlier. Sounds suspect to me.

Got this exact same text today. Equally perplexed. I called them and it was indeed the Citi fraud/early detection department. Legit number, legit text (though yes, it was the first text I'd ever received from Citi, which threw me off).

I did the exact same thing today.  I called the number in the txt, spoke with someone and got my business cleared up, then was a bit paranoid afterward and called the number on my card.  It was Citi.  I can sleep easy tonight.

It's legit. Called  customer Service on the back of the card. I usually don't call weird numbers in SMS :) But yes, bought a laptop at 11PM, got a call 7 am next day and SMS. As a comment to the guy who "Google" for 866 and didn't find any Citi related phones - dude, Customer Srvs on the back of your card starts from 866. No need to be paranoid - just cautious. Call them but on the "safe" phone and you'll be ok.

It is a legit. number from Citicards.  They no longer allow you to use your credit card over seas if you haven't done so in 6 months.  Once you call them they fix it for you right then and there.

I also confirm that this is valid.  Citi Card had questions regarding several failed online transaction attempts.  These were attempts that I had made but they thought them suspicious none the less and wanted to make sure all was well.

Yes, I just got the same thing!  I didn't like the way it looked even though I read all these postings.  I called the number on the back of my card also and they verified that it was indeed them who sent me the text. They were suspicious because I just paid off a cruise in a large amount yesterday.  At least there's a credit card company that's watching!  :-)

I just received the same message on my cell phone- only problem is I don't have a Citibank account. Called the number and an Indian from India answered, and could not retrieve my phone numbers. So I asked how they could text me, and not have my phone numbers on record? Then he wanted my social security number right off the bat, and I told him to go screw. Being that they supposedly have my info, MAIL IT
TO ME. Not being a Citi customer, I called Citibank fraud Dept., and they did not recognize the phone number at all. Watch out for this one....

I had the same message on my cellphone. I called to this number. They seems to be legit as they know my current transactions as well as my initial password. They just confirm my account activities.
