9 Mistakes Not to Commit when Dealing with Debt Collection Agencies
    ________________________________________________________________________

Debt collectors are nasty when it comes to collection of debts. They will call you late at night or at work, will send you unpleasant letters and make your life a living hell. You can make this even more worse by committing any of the following mistakes:

    1) Avoiding Their Phone Calls: If you avoid picking up the phone, they will call you even more. Be man enough to answer your calls or ask them to stop calling you. You can legally ask them to stop calling you by sending them a Stop Calling Me Letter. We discuss this more at: Stop Calling Me Letter to Harassing Debt Companies

    2) I Already Sent the Payment: Do not lie! If you tell them that you already sent the payment or the payment is in the mail while it really is not, this will make matters even worse. They even have the right to sue you for lying, so don't!

    3) Automatic Bank Debit: Sometimes the debt collection agencies will intimidate you into giving away your checkings or savings account # with your bank. Never give out your checking/savings bank account #!

    4) Don't Be Afraid: Do not allow the debt collector to intimidate you. Like Eleanor Roosevelt says, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

    5) Issue Bounced/Dishonored Checks: If you do not have money to pay the debt collectors, ask for an alternate debt settlement plan. However, do NOT issue bounced checks that could be dishonored. First, you will be charged a Non Sufficient Funds fee by your bank. Furthermore, the debt collectors will get so angry at you that they will most likely sue you for both lying and issuing bounced checks.

    6) Ignoring Your Debt: Most people owing credit card or any other form of debt will try to avoid it as much as they can by not checking their credit card statements, procrastinating their analysis of debt burdens, etc. Speaking from personal experience, I once owed $8500 in student loan debt and 6 months after graduation, I had to begin making payments on these loans. Sure enough, I tried to ignore looking at my student loan debt statement as much as I could. But, you can NOT ignore your debt. The longer you ignore your debt burdens, the worse it will become. So be man enough, and tackle your debts.

    7) Selling Your Property/Asset: If you borrowed money from a creditor and used it to buy an asset, do NOT sell that asset while the debt collectors are calling you. If you do, the debt collector will have a much better case against you in court and could reposses that property from you, if you do not have the cash.

    8) Untimely Debt Dispute: If you think you don't owe the debts that the collectors are demanding, you have a right to dispute those debts. However, do not wait too long to dispute your debts. To read more about this, see our section on Statute of Limitations on Debt Collection.

    9) Unconfirmed Debt Settlement: If you do make payments towards your debts, make sure you ask for a confirmation letter confirming that the debt collection agencies received your payment and your account is officially closed. Furthermore, check your credit report 2 months later to see if that debt is classified as "Paid" or "Settled."

    hii anonymous.........
yep admit dat da facts u gave above are good enough..but debtors need to understand onething that they need to pay of dere debts...its not jst like saying i dont have money and hang up on calls...
as u said the above activities can make da case worst..as a collector over so many years i do  admit taht fact...
the better one can take care of his debts r like , if it is an old a/c go for a settlement rather than payment plan..come up with a bulk amount and pay it off...
be smart enough to return ur voice messages, if it says "personal business matter" or "not a sales call"
be smart enough to ask for the date its reported on ur credit report..
so verify it there ...and pay it off...if u work wid a debt collector there is no way he is gonna be rude or aggressive...he will help u from da bottom of the heart...after all we collectors are human beings and we r doin our job........

again anonymous...i admit the fact that u put a lot of things in details..good work...congrats from a collector...!!!

if it is not on ur name...or not any one frm ur family..vrify da number and ask dem to take it off frm da calling list...!!!

    but be truthfull...!!!
    dont lie to a collector..
dey have many things cross verify dat whether da number belong to the right person or not?

If you already paid of your debt, y ru so afraid of things..!!!
jst get the proof of da paymnet u made ...ask dem to verify it with american medical response
    dey will do it...!!!

and as far as concern ur ssn  and dob...dey already have all those info with dem........!!!
even if u change ur number or change ur address, dey will get a hold of u easily...!!!

so dont try to get away from things...face it and get a resolution..even if u try to avoid the collections calls, its already screwing ur CBR....so be a man enough to solve ur debts...
once again if u r sure that u  already made da payment, get the proof of the same...receipt of the payment made, a cancelled check,a/c closing letter, credit card or bank statement showing da transaction...or any supporting documents which can prove taht u made the payment..!!!

    u got it..!!!
any more doubts...post here, i will revert to u..!!!

I received a phone call from Bay Area Credit Services. They said that I owed nearly $2,000 to the "credit bureau" as they said regarding an ambulance that I had taken back in June. My bill was only $500 and I asked how it could shot up to 2,000 dollars in just two months. They claimed that it was from interest. They demanded for me to pay them over the phone at the very moment and demanded for a credit card number. That just sounds ridiculous to me.

person w/ foreign accent calls looking for someone w/ my first initials, but completely different name. they leave a msg. I haven't called back and have now blocked the number. based on all the other posts about this #, I guess they use a wrong name in order to try to get correct info about whoever answers their calls, in an attempt to steal identities. DO NOT ANSWER THE CALLS OR ANY OF THEIR QUESTIONS!!!

These guys are scum. They violate the FDCA, harass people with bogus or expired debts, and think they are untouchable due to their main call center being in India. While they do have an office in CA, their calling is done from overseas.

Well I've got some *different* numbers to suggest we think about.
There are 1,440 minutes in a day.
These scum have easily pissed off over 1,000 people in the states.
There are pay phones on every corner.

These numbers are on OUR side, and it is long past time Bay Area Credit was squished like the blight on society they are. Carry a card with the callback # they left on your answering machine, and think of all the people they harass daily when you pass a pay phone and have a minute or 2 to spare.

Wait for an answer, punch in a long series of numbers, wait for a bit, and hang up. If anyone asks, you were checking the balance on your bank/visa/gift card/whatever.

Now since they might try to return a few of these calls, extra points if you can get them calling hotel lobbies or walmart stores. Now *that* is a battle I'd love to see play out.

Every minute of theirs we collectively tie up is one less they get to spend harassing our elderly and ill. Their toll free lines cannot call out if they have incoming. Community effort people, it adds up quick.
