- Heidi| 1 replyI too got a phone call with a threatening message and I don't believe him. But these calls got to stop and its not right to be harassed like that.
- Alfalfa replies to HeidiThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
- LarryThey say all the other payday loan scam collection places are scams but they arnt. They use the same fake legal tactics. When they know you know the laws and that they cant scare you they hang up on you and say"Good luck in court. There will never be a court case. Also there is no such thing as a bad check when it comes to payday loans.

- Josha Maddox| 1 replyThey called my job and said because I didn't call the number provided, they were dispatching a locator to my job. I let them know i am working and i would call when i took my lunch. I called the number and was hung up on.
- Caller: Statewide legal services
- Call type: Debt collector
- Alfalfa replies to Josha MaddoxThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- Tammy replies to Jane Doe| 1 replyThat is what they did to me and called several other people I know or are related to and now caused a bunch of grief!
- Anon replies to j. FergusonFile a complaint with your state Office of Attorney General, Consumer Protection, and be sure to specify that these callers do not sound foreign, that they sound North American, either U.S. or possibly Canadian. This scam used to come from outside the U.S., but now appears like it may be originating from inside the U.S.

- JaneThey called me today stating the same thing. They called from a phone number 1-866-857-9143. At first the guy did not want to provide me with his name or the name of the company. Finally he did and told me he was from statewide legal services. He told me that I'm probably not sure what's going on but he's trying to serve me and he will call me back in 15 mins. When I called the number, I told them I know my legal rights and you can not make these harassment threats. I told them I have filed a complaint with the FTC, CFPB and also contacted my attorney. The call was disconnected afterward. They are a scam! Do not let them scare you. You have legal rights.
