Caller asked for me by name. Said he was calling from Canada Revenue Agency and he has important information for me. Said he had to ask me a couple of questions to make sure I was who I said I was.

He asked me for my birthday. I said to him that if he was calling from Canada Revenue he should know that and other things about me so I asked him to tell me what my birthday was and he said he couldn't because of the privacy act. I told him I wasn't going to answer any questions and he said okay and I hung the phone up.

I also received a call from 866 864 5835 caller asked for me by name when i identified myself called said sorry i recieved this call by error.

Have had repeated calls from this number too.  Haven't answered any, am suspicious by nature with any 800 or calls from the other side of the country.

Advice to others:  even if they say they're from Revenue Canada, do NOT offer them any info.  Have read reports on another site about this 866 number where the caller asked for SIN number.  Rev Canada would not ask for your SIN, they already have everybody's SIN.  SIN number is a key bit of info people can use to commit identity fraud.  So do NOT give it out.

Okay...so lets say I did give out my SIN number...anything I could do to avoid troubles in the future?

This is a scam, never give your sin over the phone, also Canada Revenue already has your SIN, and woulde never ask for it over the phone.

No it is not. It is a fraud. This number is not listed on the CRD website, and they would never ask for a SIN number over the phone. Whoever posted this is in on the scam or an idiot.

Got 2 calls so far from that number, always asking me to call them back on an important issue and to make sure that I have my SIN number ready.
Revenue Canada deals through the mail and not by phone in general.

Leave a message telling that was revenue canada, and they eed we call back for an important issue. They said a name, but was a wrong name, similar to our names, but not the right ones. They aske to have our sin numbers available, abnd they said that we need to call to a diferente number (866-864-5841) than the one showed on the caller id (866-864-5835).

It is Revenue Canada.  They ask your sin for identity verification. Same with dob and address

A call to 1-800-O-Canada (The Fed's info line) verify's that this is indeed a CRA call centre number.

You can also check with phone busters. www.phonebusters.com, the RCMP's anti-phone fraud unit.

They asked for my SIN as well, I didn't give it and won't. If its Canada Revenue agency they wouldn't need to ask these questions because they know who I am already.  In fact, I asked if I was in trouble and they said they wouldn't call if I wasn't but they wouldn't tell me why unless I gave out my SIN. Hmmm, no thanks. I wont be answering that next call.

I do not trust this at all and your a fool if you give out any info over the phone, they are calling you, you do not have to prove anything to them.  This how identity theft happens.  All they should do is ask if they are speaking to "insert your name here" and then proceed. And if they are calling you then they are required under law to send you a letter at least a week in advance of that call.  That letter has a reference number on it for your case.  There is no need to give out any personal information and certianly not your SIN number to these people.

No, you are an idiot. It is the CRA. I called them at their number and they called me back with this one.
As they are the gov't, don't you think they have more than one line.
Of course they ask for your SIN. They need to ensure it is you.

Of course they have your SIN, they want to make sure it is you so they want you to verify it.
