This is collection agency NCO Financial. They have been harassing me about school loans for years that are current and in good standing. Very aggravating!

Caller asked to verify last four digits of an employee social security number and verification of birth date. When asked why they needed this information was told for wage garnishment. I asked for the number they could be reached at since I did not have that information readily available. I was given the first three digits of their phone number and they terminated the call.

I answered a call today at work and a woman asked to speak to someone in the HR department to verify employment. I told her my boss was in a meeting and asked her to call back in about an hour. she asked if anyone else could verify and I told her yes and was going to get another person to get the information that she requested. I asked her the employees name and low and behold she blurts out MY name. I told her that she was speaking to me and she asked for the last 4 digits of my social security number and when I gave them to her she said that there must be a mistake because it did not match the person she was looking for. I had a hard time understanding her but I think she said she was from transworld something or other.

    And the results ...
    Results of FTC Complaint

The penalties that NCO Financial faced as a result of the FTC complaint came in at a steep $3.2 million civil penalty. This became the largest penalty amount ever obtained by the FTC against a third party debt collector. This giant penalty amount also came with an agreement from Expert Global Solutions (NCO Financial) and its subsidiaries to stop harassing consumers and using abusive collection tactics that are against the law. If they violate the FDCPA at any time within 5 years after the complaint was filed (July 8, 2013) each violation will be looked at as a separate violation from those listed in the complaint, and will result in more monetary penalties to be paid by the collection agency.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

They called (woman) my work cell number and told me that I owed money on my student loan, which I paid off about 7 years ago. I could hear a dog barking in the background and I could barely understand her. When I told her that I had paid my student  loan she wanted the last 4 digits of my SS#. When I told her that this sounded like a scam she said that the computers were not working so she could not verify my payments. I hung up! I contacted my credit union and ordered copies of my checks and direct deposit payments for the last 6 years asap. This is a scam! Do not give these people any information. I graduated from college 10 years ago and now they are contacting me? BS. Scam!

Been calling my work number for a couple weeks.  Googled the number and came across this website.  The lady got hold of my HR and transfer the call to me.  Glad HR didn't give any info about me.  Said the same thing, collections and requesting to collect $ for my student loans.  Told her I knew this was a scam and to stop calling.  Lets see if she calls again!  Let your HR people know about this.

"Been calling my work number for a couple weeks."  Were they told you not to call you at work?  Did they tell your HR dept that they were looking for money for student loans?  It sounds like you have several FDCPA violations right there.  Aslo, since she talked to you they were required by law to do this:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.

Yesterday I received a call from this number on my work phone.  I had already left for home and didn't know about it until this morning.  I always google numbers that I don't know.  I would really like to know how they got this number because I just started working here.  Now that I know this number, I won't answer.

Received a call from this asking for employment verification.  Asked for a man that does not work here.  Kept asking me"are you sure?  He said he did"  I replied that I have never heard of that man and I have been HR at this company for a year and a half.  His name is not familiar from any records that I have access to.  She tried to give me a social security number to verify, but I refused.  Was very pushy and then annoyed that he wasn't a current employee.
