- Cell Phone Owner| 6 repliesI have received several of these calls in the past two years regarding a party who I think at one time had my cell phone number. There was a pre-recorded message from Northeast Collection Bureau looking for Brianna Sharp. I believe she lives in Riverdale, IL. According to the recorded message, my call regarded file number 105471. Evidently bill collectors have been trying to contact this individual to get a bill paid. Very annoying when someone does not pay their bills and the next user of the phone is called and annoyed again and again and again, so, I hope Brianna Sharp pays her bill so I quit getting these calls. Again, Brianna, please pay your bill.

- Liz Hand replies to Cell Phone Owner| 2 repliesI got one of these calls for a guy I hired to work at a firm. He claims he has never had any bad debt.
This could be a ploy by scammers with nothing to do. - Liz HandThey provided a file number and asked that this employee calls them bac, Why are they calling my personal cell number?
- Caller: Northeast Collection Bureau
- Call type: Debt collector
- FrustratedThey left a generic message so I called them back and in about 25 seconds the call sounds like you get put on hold and you hear elevator music. Then in another 20 seconds or so the call is disconnected. I called back and the same thing happened. If it was really that important, they would have a live person on the other end of the phone.

- Crystal| 1 replyThey called me and left an automated message saying it was a pre-legal matter and that I could have my attorney call them. I called, they were able to give me a date and a hospital that I did have, but then I asked what company they were from and they gave me an acronym. I set up payment to come out at the end of the month. I decided I wanted to get more info, so I canceled my payment, told them I didn't have the money and I wasn't going to make a payment right now. The guy on the phone argued with me said they were going to take legal action on a $300 hospital bill from 2009. I told him "fine, do what you have to do, I want proof and I want to compare with my credit report. " He kept arguing with me and I asked for a supervisor and magically the phone call ended. I called right back and they answer with a completely different collection agency name. I asked for a supervisor and I got connected with a voice mail. this company didn't say the verbatim word track saying they were a debt collector or that it was an attempt to collect a debt. That is the law.. they violated some major rule to be a debt collector. I am closing that account i was going to pay with because I do not believe they are a real collection agency. Ask questions and get proof before you agree to pay anything!
- Caller: I was given 2 completely different names, dunno

- Resident47 replies to Cell Phone OwnerYou don't know that the person requested actually owes a debt, and it's rude to publicize and berate her name and essentially help the collectors to shame her into obedience.
To halt the misfired skip trace calls, YOU must take direct action, not complain and wait for a rescue. My advice for "not me" cases is found here:
https://800notes.com/forum/ta-34af6a034ba34b6/unending-collection-calls - Resident47 replies to CrystalBelatedly you learned what should be a reflex response. Never ask ''How do I pay?'' Always demand, ''Prove I owe!''
In your place I would be quietly recording the veiled and empty threat of litigation and documenting any other confusing or lawbreaking behavior. Meanwhile, the agency would get little to no information they might demand. Their calls would end without any hint that I might pay unverified debt on the word of strangers. Then, if that was the first contact, I would wait a week for the dunning letter required by federal law, and respond in kind with a demand for validation and my contact restrictions.
With dodgy collectors I know that arguing on the phone is useless for resolution, and only good for gathering evidence of FDCPA violations. I demand what the law grants me, fair and civil treatment. If I don't get any, money passes (eventually) from the agency to me in the form of a damage award.

- Matt replies to Cell Phone OwnerYou need to report those scumbags to the FTC. You can even sue them if the harassment is sufficiently egregious. Brianna may be struggling to find work and feed her family. It's the collectors that deserve your wrath, not her.
- Matt replies to Liz Hand| 1 replyImagine the lawsuit this person you hired would have on his hands if that call caused him to lose your trust. These debt collectors have boundaries over which they must not step. By calling you they have done exactly that. Report them to the Federal Trade Commission, please.
- PMH| 1 replyI am concerned because when these people called me I told them I would ONLY send a payment IF they send me a letter or the balance information. So they did. BUT every time I call the number I get a voicemail message. The letter gave me monthly payoff amounts until the balance of $1600 is paid off ...I'm having SOME concerns with sending this company ANY amount of money....MOST if not ALL of my creditors I am able to find some information on line about them...however THIS company NORTHEAST COLLECTION BUREAU...I can find NOTHING!
- Caller: NORTHEAST CREDIT BUREAU

- The Watcher replies to PMHInformation on them can be pulled from court records, since they are the defendants in some FDCPA suits

Signed by Judge Steven P Logan on 7/21/14. (REW)” - Lanette Jones| 1 replyCalling saying I owe $1300 for a loan, but wont release more information
- Call type: Debt collector
- Slim replies to Lanette JonesA phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:
* Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]
Source:
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.
IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/
If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

He told me he would take me off the account and then hung up. I kept cAlling him back to make sure he did what he said, and then he started yelling at me and hung up. These people are slime.
