I did not get a call, but a card with this number was left inside of a brown envelope hanging on my front doorknob when I came home today.
It said, "Important, call Rangor Fairbank, CitiMortgage."  When I dialed the number late at night, it was indeed some CitiMortgage entity, with an automated menu asking for account number....I find it upsetting to get communication from my mortgage company left hanging on my doorknob.  I never  dealt with this person or this phone number before when communicating with my mortgage company.  I wonder what's going on.

We too got one of these on our door on the same day as you, Feb 6, and with the name Ranger Fairbank.  How wierd is that.  Are you in Michigan and are you currently in bankruptcy.  We have a Citimortgage account but we are in bankruptcy and when I called the number they didn't know anything about the card or this person Ranger Fairbank.  Very wierd I think.

I started receiving calls a few weeks ago.  At first there was no one on the line, but finally, a recorded message stated the following:
"(A woman's voice)  This is not a sales call.  Please call Pallisades at 1-866-230-8075.  Our hours are 8 a.m. to something, Eastern Standard Time."
The calls initially started in the afternoon, but, now they occur daily around 8 a.m. which is disturbing my sleep.  This is the second collection agency which has used this tactic.  If there was an effective government in place, these people would not be in business.  It is long past time to eliminate these creeps from doing business in this country.

Not a call but a "telewire" that came via the post office.  The name Ranger Fairbank and this number 866 940-5786 to call to "bring my account current" was on it.  I checked CitiMortgage (using the number on MY BILL) and they verified that my account was fine.  I think this is a scam, the number does not cross reference.  Ranger Fairbank also appears in other posts with different numbers.  BE WARY about calling any phone number coming in the mail.

I too just got one of these suspicious brown folders from Ranger Fairbank with 8669405787.  I called the # and it asked for the last 4 numbers of my soc.  I put in a random #. My brown folder was in my front door with no address or anything to tell where it came from.

A guy in a white beat up looking rusted sedan wearing work clothes & a knit cap approached me as I went to throw something out in the trash. I quickly went inside & locked the front door. He showed me a brown envelope with an elastic & I told him he could leave it on the door knob. I think he was sitting in his car for a while before I came outside. The note in the envelope gave no details but a phone number and IMPORTANT please call / IMPORTANTE. Please be ready to give your account number. Do I look STUPID? Am I going to call a random number left in an envelope by a seedy looking fellow on my door with no mention of a company name or reference or legal postage?

If this is a "tactic" it stinks. I have a settlement with my mortgage company so I don't think it is from them. They have our phone numbers.

We had a visit from the same person today, March 31, 2008. He came in a red beat-up Malibu car. He said he was Ranger Fairbanks and gave my husband 866-940-5787 number to call. We did and Citimortgage answered and apparently they never send anyone to our home and everything with our mortgage was fine, no problem. Be ware...please try to get license plate # or business card and report them to the police.. this is a scam. We will be on the look-out for this car again. Apparently they have been in our house 2 times. They took a picture the first time and now they actually stop by. He caught my husband off guard, and since I deal with Citimortgage he gave me the information to call. This is definitely a scam........be careful. This happen in Findlay, OH.

I received the same brown envelope hanging from my screen door when I got home from work tonite.  I am currently behind on my mortgage and in the beginning stages of foreclosure.  I have worked something out with the mortgage company and should be caring for my situation very soon.  However, this is very VERY disturbing to hear.  I presume that someone fitting the description you gave above was possibly sitting outside of my home today as well waiting for me to come out.  If this Ranger Fairbank does come to my home again while I am here, I may just call the cops on him.

I am someone who delivers those brown envelopes with the phone number. We are contractors who deliver these for many different mortgage companies or banks. In most cases they do not tell us why we are delivering these messeage to the homeowner, however as several of the posting have stated, they are behind on their mortgage payment or in default. Other reasons may vary from recent refinance. As I stated, we have no idea why the mortgage company wants you to call them, we figure they have a reason or why would they pay us to go to your house. We normally try and spend as little time as possible in front of your house as we are paid per job, so the quicker we can get from one house to the next the better it is for us. We do have paper work that we have to fill out and in some cases we are asked to take a picture of the house to prove that we were there and to document the condition of the house. Also, as long as you are in bankruptcy we come out to your house once a month. We do not make contact, however we normally take a picture and verify that the house is still occupied. Hope this helps.

People:  Pay your bills, and "field chase" companies will not have to be hired to deliver messages and take pictures of your house.  Better yet, even if you can't pay your bills, be responsible enough to pick up the phone and CALL THEM.  I guarantee that no company will waste money sending someone to your door if you are in contact with them.  All this scare talk and pretended ignorance is just nonsense.  Everybody that has posted here knows they owe CitiMortgage money.

It's citimortgage and it's not a scam.  Try calling the number instead of spending so much time freaking out about it and jumping on the paranoia bandwagon.  Don't want them to see your number? Use *67.  It's not that hard. In most cases they only want to verify information.

The brown envelope designed to hang on one's doorknob was retrieved by our son as he came home from school. He didn't see anyone delivering the envelope. This was rather disturbing to find because we are dealing with Citimortgage on a re-fi and doing such during this mortgage crisis is tough going. Thanks to all for the alert about this potential scam. I will call tomorrow and give a phone message machine a "tape"full! :-) Ciao!

This note is a follow-up to mine of August 14, 2008 and a response to Scott's note of April 8, 2008. I'm curious, Scott, that you would find this particular website and offer your explanation for what is going on with these envelopes. Are you also being paid to monitor these websites to get a pulse on things? For those of you who are interested, I am located in Marietta, GA., by the way. It appears that Scott and his vermin with their heady miasma are heading south from Findlay, OH.

Voices of reason...Its not a scam or a fraud. I called, talked to someone in the call center, surprise..surprise...I am behind and they have been trying to reach me. Come on folks, lets not forget, the home, as it is ours, it is also the banks security and responsiblility to make sure it is being cared for...have you any idea how many people abandon their homes, with no notice to the bank..leaving it open for crime and vandalism?... Its that simple.

We got a brown door knob hanger with a note in it today, 09/22/08 from this impersonator named ranger fairbank.  It said to call with account info in hand.  We are not calling.  Based upon the previous notes below, this is some kind of bs scam. The same 866 number was on the card enclosed in the hanger.
