If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.
By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.
Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.
They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.
Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.
The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.
If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number. - PatrickThey called at least 6 times today. So, I called the number back (it is scary that they knew my full name) and asked them to remove my number from their data base. They responded that I would need to get a new number and hung up. I called back ad advised them that the FBI and FTC had been notified. The response was: they have been trying for years and have gotten no where.
No problem, I have now called them, with redial, over 20 times. When they answer, I hang up or play music. Guess they don't like the added expense, tying up their lines, and having messed up call reports. Oh well. So far, they haven't called back.- Caller: 866-978-7419

- CharlesHow lazy can these crooks get? Not only are they robo-dialing, they are using a really lame speech synthesizer. Here's the bit Comcast transcribed (they called 3 times). Note, the transcription is accurate -- they actually said "your DUES with the IRS." Yea! The IRS is a club, and I'm a member! I love the part where they say "a bill collection officer would visit you soon." Really? They're going door to door? LOL. I feel sorry for anyone stupid enough to be fleeced by these scam artists, but I do admire the crook's industry. This must be the fifth variation on this scam we received in the last 3 months.
"Your name. So in next 24 hours we will be marking a lean on your assets and your bank account is due to your inability to settle your dues with the IRS a bill collection officer would visit you soon to complete paper work. - BrianWe have gotten a couple calls with similar statements mentions above. They are very clever scammers using real IRS numbers/caller IDs to make you think they are IRS and had so many details about us.
My wife talked to them. She said I take care of the taxes. The next time they called she told them to call me at work and gave them the local Sheriff department phone number. I think that took care of the return calls.- Caller: IRS Claims Fraud
