They called and said I had won 50 million dollars and a new Mercedes.  They were from Jamaica and could barely speak English- I don't think so.

This  slimy group are going on craigs list and asking about items then when they contact the seller they go into their spiel on the phone, we have been practically been harrassed by them on the phone and in snail  mail. I don't understand how they get away with saying they are from 'publishers clearing house'

This is an invaluable post!  As I expected, because of all the negative media coverage regarding the "Green Dot Card" scam, these filthy, black stained Jamaican rodents would alter their approach. I have seen a few reports of these foul smelling chiggers trying to run the Microsoft scam, however, being told, "Da com-pew-tuh be mad infected, mon," isn't likely to fool anyone. Plus the the primitive Jamaican brain would never be able to manipulate the website/software to effectively pull off this version and would be limited solely to an attempt to extract personal information. The use of Craig's list as a source for locating marks is fascinating (the rodent who called this morning, did have an address  - an address that I have used in previous investigations.)

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

If you have caller ID, you can see who is calling and don't answer.  If you don't, get yourself a call blocker, or at least phone with caller ID so you can tell who is calling and/or block or ignore unwanted calls.

Call blockers are useless if the phone line doesn't have Caller ID.
In that situtation, people rely on answering machines to screen their calls.
Legitimate callers leave a message, stupid fraudsters leave a message to call back, smart fraudsters hang up without leaving a message.

People who have no reason to be receiving calls from Jamaica  can just block the entire area code 876.

Those who have reason - relatives, friends, business - can easily "good-list" the numbers they know are legitimate and answer calls from those numbers. They then treat all other numbers as suspicious, and as you suggest, block those particular numbers to prevent pesky future calls.

And more often than not, if there is no caller ID, there often is no answering machine.  That is why I suggested getting a phone with caller ID.  My 95 yr. old mother has no caller ID and disconnected the answering machine we gave her.  She also has no computer, no microwave and has no intention getting any of them.  I was simply suggesting that Michael might be better served by not answering if he is aware of who is calling.

Got a call at 7:30 am!
My work shift starts at 3:30 pm as I work at a restaurant.
Needless to say, it was an unwelcome telemarketer!
