It's a scam. I been on the phone with my phone company forever to get charges removed.

Said we won 3. Million dollars and a car and then ask us to go buy a $300 prepaid card to claim our prize!

DO NOT CALL THAT NUMBER BACK!

Some area codes are not toll-free numbers and calls from any other area code are billed at international long distance rates.

Some curious people return the call and will immediately be charged $19.95 for an international call fee and an additional $9-per-minute charge, according to a news release from the BBB.

Consumers across the country report calls from the Dominican Republic (809), Jamaica (876), British Virgin Islands (284) and Grenada (473), as well as some other area codes

NOTES:
1) Some scam calls show a local / domestic Caller ID, but a returned call might be  autoforwarded to one of the area codes mentioned above.  If you returned the call, and heard two very quick rings, followed by normally spaced rings, you were caught ... and may be billed for the long distance call. (Yes, the forwarder [not the caller] is supposed to be billed ... but the Caller ID was not supposed to be spoofed, was it?)

2) There is some suspicion that scammers "advertise" an 800 / toll-free number on the Caller IDs, but returning the call may result in a bill to the caller. This "trick" may not require too much sophistication, since it is currently permissible under certain conditions:

Note that the caller is supposed to be notified of those charges, before the charges are incurred ... but, again, we have seen some interesting hacks of the phone system.


This might  be possible if the scammer is sufficiently sophisticated, given their ability to spoof Caller IDs:
Additionally, if you return any scammer's call, they can claim YOU initiated the "business arrangement" or YOU solicited the information ... and you will be put on several scammers' lists of numbers to call.

So, the lesson is: NEVER return the call made from an unknown number, specially if that caller did not leave a message!

We added a line to our at&t plan for my 8 yr old to have an emergency phone. Four days later several funny numbers started calling her. Now mind you, this is not a smart phone, so its not even a phone u can google on. I called this number back 876 458 5261to kindly inform tgem that they were calling an 8 yr old and not to call this particular number again. He said he was from the publishers clearing house.I then rerepeated myself.  So, then he got real nasty an started raising his voice saying  that " no one called my daughter" & then was ralking over me yelling at me "LISTEN TO ME!! YOU DON'T CALL THIS NUMBER BACK.". So that pissed me off and I ripped him a new one, he tried to ralk over me but I was the loudest. I told him "excuse me??! No no.. my 8 yr old child had a missed call from this number, & you do not xall it again..im really not the one to [***]".. then he tried to tell me to calm down, uh really?  Nope u got what u asked for buddy. So I repeated the do not call statement again to make myself abundantly clear,  & i forcefully asked him "DO YOU GO THAT??!" As a rhetorical question and hung up.  That is absolutelyrridiculous.  He must of confused me with a pushover! !

are you serious. they charged your 8 yr old over 9 dollars a minute and they are jamaican scammers!

Hang up calls, threats of violence, funny numbers (even from the Vatican City country code, lol) have made things interesting for me.

Unfortunately you are in for a nasty surprise on your next phone bill. You called the island of Jamaica at premium International Long Distance rates. You could possibly be charged as much as $20.00 + $9.99/minute for that call.

The caller was a pathetic vermin from Jamaica who probably dialed your child's number at random or got it from the previous user's data base.  The post above yours by "Slim" is very informative.

she probably didn't Google the number first. A lot of people just call the number back to say do not call again.  Geez.

... and you probably did not notice that my answer was posted in August ... about four months ago, according to my calendar.

Folks should NOT call back unknown phone numbers ...   all that does is verify the number is "live" to the scammer, or it might cost money (as shown above), or the callback might even be to a spoofed phone number (and wake up the little old lady down the street).

So, use some intelligence ... connect the dots ...  the phone system is NOT as safe as it used to be!

I got the same call from this guy claiming he was pch also. He tried to scam me for 100 bucks to send from Wal-Mart to Wal-Mart to a Glinda Jones in Grayson LA. I took all the info but didn't fallow through and called pch and reported him. He called back and I said what I was told to say to him. And he started cursing and slandering me. Telling me to suck his you know what. And threatened to come after my husband and saying we don't know who we are messing with and stuff. I wonder if there is an USA federal embassy in Jamaica. I would love to press charges and also find out who this lady is he wanted me to send the money to.

we received the call telling us we won 2.5 million and a new Mercedes. to claim our prize we had to call 1-876-4158-5261. so we looked it up and found it here and all yall's comments. thanks for posting your calls and info. you saved us a bunch of money and heart ache.

This number called my cell.  Saw it was from Jamaica and decided to have some fun.  When the guy finally started talking, I said hello...hello.  every time he was saying something, I said hello.  He then asked if I was f*****g deaf twice.  Then he hung up.  I had not read the comments here, not knowing I could possibly get charged if I called him back.  I waited a few min and really thought he was calling from a fake number but he wasnt.  It rang and rang and then he answered.  I told him I was NOT f*****g deaf and if he called my number again, I would report him to the authorities lol i guess I will know when the phone bill comes in if I got charged for it or not.

Said I won 2.8 million and new mercedes. I asked if I could have 3 way call with a friend. The caller said yes, so I had police get on phone with me. Caller ended up haning up after realized police was for real. ended with a profanity and hung up.This is a scam of course.

Got a call from these people. Said I'd won 2.5 million and a Mercedes...Blah blah blah. Needed $1020 BEFORE the check and car were delivered. I told them bring the check and car, titled in MY name to MY house, ride with me to the bank, let me deposit the check and get a receipt, THEN I'd give them their $1020. "Oh no no no no sir, we have the government on the phone and they are recording this call so we have to have the $$$ now by law or we all go to jail!" So I tell the guy on the phone.."Mr. Publishers Clearing House?"  "Yes sir" he says, I say "Go [***] yourself."  Go figure.

Same scenario, you won 2 cars, and 2.5 million up to 24 million dollars on different calls.  All saying they are lottery officials.  Calling on Senior Citizens.  Mom just got a new AT T phone also - connection?  They did get her for 300.00. :-(  No millions and no cars. :-(

We received a call saying we won publishers clearing house.  2.7 million.  We asked him what our name was, he did not know.  We asked him where we lived and he said" you think I am a fool?"  We said well, yes, and he went on a rage saying if we had an animal we should go and blip them. He went on to say he already blipped your wife...crazy!

Some clown calls me and says I have won 2.5 million dollars from PCH and a Mercedes. He asked me to call back this number.
Of course, I did not call back.
