A Dozen Ways to Protect Yourself
The next time you get a "personal" letter or telephone call telling you "it’s your lucky day," the Federal Trade Commission encourages you to remember that:

    1. Legitimate sweepstakes don’t require you to pay or buy something to enter or improve your chances of winning, or to pay "taxes" or "shipping and handling charges" to get your prize.

If you have to pay to receive your "prize," it’s not a prize at all.

I will JUMP FOR JOY when I hear this WONDERFUL NEWS. Yeah...right. Guy with a globally uneducated ear calls to inform me that some incredibly enthusiastic yutz with an "Indian accent" called for ME at HIS lahind line (which has local service only). Coincidence? Rather odd that I'd spoken to UPS from THAT land line earlier today...I really ought to alert UPS and his phone carrier about this, as I have my own unlisted phone# AND a cell phone. It just happened to be convenient to call the Toll-Free# from that location, because my cell gets a bad signal indoors.

This "Indian" bloke tells this rather um..basic person He is calling from UPS and claims his name is "Mike Henry." Says that I have just won a brand new Dodge Whatsis pickup truck (Sorry. Pickup trucks do not excite me. But I digress). And I have also won an exciting vacation to some luxurious place in the Caribbean or Mexico. Tells 'basic person' to contact me RIGHT AWAY and have me call him back at 876-567-4446 and give a certain 6-digit UPS code when I call. Again, I will be JUMPING FOR JOY when I hear this news!

I tell 'basic person': this is a SCAM. He says: I don't CARE what it is...just call the NUMBER! This is SAME 'basic person' whose bank account I helped save when he fell for a FREE WAL-MART GIFT CARD for only $1.29 S&H via his VISA/Debit Bank Card 16 months ago. Some people NEVER LEARN.

So, I run the number in Google...of COURSE it's a scam. Just so nobody gets hurt JUMPING FOR JOY, here is some honest info on UPS. "Rush Delivery" numbers are NEVER 6 digits long. They always begin with a very specific number. I'm NOT telling you the precise information about Rush Delivery online, because "Mike Henry" might be able to read. Regular shipping/tracking numbers typically begin with '1Z'... and then go on for half a mile. But even an idiot like "Mike Henry" gets hip to the REAL UPS codes, be aware: UPS does NOT award prizes like this! Before you JUMP FOR JOY, call the REAL UPS company and tell them WHO called you, the number they called you from AND the "magical code#" given to you. Here's the UPS MAIN #: (800) 742-5877. For UPS Express Critical (for Overnight/Rush Deliveries): (800) 714-8779. Don't answer or call back the 876 area code.
