I got a call, supposedly from Dish Network, and they were running a promotion to upgrade my dish network receiver to DVR and give me a discount of $15 per month for the next 12 months for doing so.

The caller seemed to be looking up my information on Dish Network's systems - but lo and behold, he had my address from 5+ years ago. He also wanted to verify the last 4 of my social, which on giving an incorrect number actually went through!! Then after chatting more and working me through the process progressively, he wanted to know my full social security number - which of course I gave a wrong number and it went through. And then they needed a credit card number to set up my installation - which I happily gave (again incorrect one). And finally they needed my date of birth - which when I asked the need for - they were quite insistent that their system and their process required it. This time I asked them to put a dummy number.

The best part is that they gave this number for calling them back - which actually works and reaches back to the person who called - who again pretended to be from Dish Network. The caller id of the incoming call was garbled though.

I immediately called up Dish Network to verify and indeed - there is no such promotion going on.

These are crooks after your credit card numbers posing to give you a good deal on Dish Network and Direct TV. Beware and don't give them any information. They sound legitimate but are not!

My father just got duped today. he gave arun verma his last four of his social, credit card number, birthdate, ...we'll have to keep an eye on everything now. when i got home, i called the number they left as a call back number. the phone was picked up by an arun verma but then he said arun was busy and would try me later....that's when i knew something was up and i googled the number and found this thread. i just chatted with dish network online and they don't have this number on file.....so many crooks around these days. as i reiterated to my father, don't give any personal information on the phone (luckliy he is not net savvy yet) even if it is me!!!
