Amazon also uses this number to verify your phone number when you sign up for a seller account.

I recieved two calls, one at 221am, and 223 am.  Inappropriate for anyone to call at that hour.  I didnt hear nor answer my phone.  No message left. I sent a text telling them not to call again.

    An Amazon Seller
This is actually useful information if not welcome. The phone call means that somebody who knows your number could have been trying to set up an account perhaps in your name, perhaps in somebody else's name, but used your phone number as a reference. It is a good security measure used by Amazon when you have to provide banking details to sell an item but if somebody punches in the wrong phone number, the wrong number gets called and the process could well be initiated anywhere in the world in any other time zone.  If you are not the person setting up the account then somebody else may be fraudulently trying some mischief. It would be wise to check your account at Amazon ( if you have one or have ever bought anything from them )  and make sure it has not been compromised. Change your password at least. Of course it could be just that somebody accidentally typed in your phone number by mistake. Personally I'm not that trusting and would make sure my ID hasn't been stolen.

The "Unknown" code really is not correct, but the other choices are worse so I left it that way.

When I signed up for Amazon web services, it displayed a code on my screen, then asked for a phone number to call me back at.  When I answered the phone, I entered the code.

Although it defaulted to my phone number, it let me change the number to dial, so if I had mistyped my phone number, someone else would have gotten a call from Amazon calling asking for a code.

This is a legitimate number, and if it dials you without your permission, it is certainly just a mistake on the part of someone trying to set up an Amazon account.

It is indeed Amazon calling to verify an account creation, and while I can confirm the accuracy of the above two responses, their disparate opinions on the potential motivation of the caller prompted me got me to thinking that...

    a. Yes, I really have too much time in my hands
    b. There needs to be some kind of voice of reason to soothe future viewers that in a world running rampant with evils such as identity theft, domestic abuse, terrorism, clubbing baby seals and Justin Bieber, a bridge can indeed be built between paranoia and naivete.

    But not today.

Take a look at when they happened. Looking at the fact these posts were virtually all posted late at night, my guess tired, drunk or some combination of the two would lead to far more accidents such as these.

Having said that, just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you :)

From the previous posts, I guess Amazon is calling me. But I ONLY have a buyer's account. I tried to set up a seller's account today, but it said i put in an incorrect code. The call ended up going to voicemail so I can guess that there wasnt another account set up unless I would have gotten an alert. Plus... my buyer's profile is under a completely different number.....

a LEGITIMATE call from Amazon.com in my case.

Amazon was placing a call to verify my contact phone number while I was signing up for one of their web services.  I clicked on a button on their website, and my phone rang within 5 seconds.

If you receive a call from this number, perhaps someone entered your number by accident?  perhaps someone used your number as a counterfeit?

Your callers do not maintain this site or this web page. Your callers cannot magically determine which numbers should not be called based on anonymous comments. You will not get compliance with your orders until, if possible, you deliver them *directly* to your caller.

Legit call-back for registration with Amazon Web Services (and, apparently, other Amazon services as well).

It could be used to prank someone, by registering with Amazon using someone else's phone number.
