It was an automated message that said it wasn't a sales call & called themselves Mechantile. It was intended for the head of household. I was instructed to call the 1-877 number during there business hour's. I had no intention of calling the number back.

Called in laws looking for my husband a number of times.  When I called them, they would not talk to me at all, saying that it was some federal law and that they could only talk to my husband.  I asked them to at least tell me what the call was about and they kept spewing the "federal law" crap.  If they are a real company, I'd be shocked.

Nicki, it's most likely a collection agency. They are not allowed to divulge information about the debt to anyone other than the person who owes said debt. I am shocked to hear that a collection agency is actually following laws.

Oh, and I have no debts, so if this is a collection agency, I don't know the hell is going on. I'd like to reach through the phone and smack someone.

The automated message used to say it was from a place called Merchantile...the same number & name appear on my caller ID...716-817-6409 MAB but the automated message now say's it's from Tammy Bell...Medical collection's asking the head of household return the call. A friend of mine called it for [***]'s & giggle's & got a woman who said  she would transfer her to Tammy...got her voicemail...she still hasn't gotten a call back from her & she probably won't...GOOD...this is getting very tiring & old. There has got to be a way to track who has purchased this 877 number.

I was told the 716-817-6049 number is an automated dialer.Well I decided to make the call back to them for [***]'s & giggles...I got a real person...I made sure I *67 first....they answered Mechantile...the 1st call..I asked what it was & who is Tammy Bell & she wanted to know my phone number 1st..I refused she then got beligerent & said "Well then we will just keep calling you"..I had 2 words for her & hung up. The 2nd time a man said "Merchantile"..he then said they were a business that provides private & confidential information to business'...asked for my number I refused again..he got nasty & I gave him the same 2 word's I gave the other lady. Since I was kinda having fun doing this I called 2 other times & they were both adamant on me giving them my number. The last person I asked if they were medical collection & she said yes we do that also. If this was a legit collection agency they would answer the phone by the name of the agency...I know for a fact I owe nothing medical..let alone anything in collections..I figure I might as well have some fun & just call them a few times....It really helps release the stress they cause...lol...

Well we FINALLY found out what they were calling about....They were actually looking for my husband's employer & another person that worked there that was in charge of filing the accident's & worker's comp paperwork. Apparently the company's insurance company owe's some money for medical bill's regarding my husbands injury back in '05. They weren't looking for us to pay the bill's nor does it affect our credit...we have an attorney making sure of this...just looking for the appropriate person at the company that they need to contact...they have tried to contact the person in charge of this but he has recently retired & the new guy obviously isn't calling them back. So we were more than happy to give them the information they need to contact the company..we are sick of the call's. He also plans on taking the phone number to the person in charge & telling him he has to straighten this out or they will be contacted by our lawyer. e asled to be taken off their "do not call" list & add the companies number...they actually were very compliant & polite about it..so we will see...

Have gotten an automated call from Tammy Bell at 877-254-0943.  Called back and they of course said they couldn't come to the phone.  So I hung up. After thinking about it for a minute, I called the number back and said if you want to talk to a human being, then put one on the phone.  That there were no outstanding medical bills at my phone number and I gave it.  Let's see if a human calls back.

I got an automated call from the Offices of Tammy Bell, a collection agency, and I was instructed to call back. It was 8:01 AM on Saturday morning, but thankfully I was already working at my desk. I phoned back, and got a real person within 2-rings. She was polite and asked for my phone number. It turns out that this is how they match your call to a name they have on file. They already have both, they just need callers' help in matching them up. There is nothing sinister about this part. The call was resolved once I learned that Ms. Tammy Bell's office was looking for a previous tenant who no longer lived at this address. She said that she'd remove our number from the call list and this should be the end of it. We'll see, but in the mean time, if the previous renter is out there listening somewhere (Phillip Reed): Pay your bills!!! We are tired of getting called for your unpaid debts!

They've been calling for over 6 months now. When we call back we just get a busy signal or another automated phone line. We have the same problem as MM1980. These are calls for a previous tenant. I thought at one time we may had spoken to someone at MAB to inform them that the address may be the same but the person they are looking for is not here, yet they continually call. We too are get tired of being harrassed for the debts of a previous tenant

I have recieved numerous automated phone messages from the office of Tammy Bell.  Each time I call, they tell me that they have the wrong number and will remove me from the list.  This has been happening since January.  The women who work at this company are EXTREMELY RUDE and I am persuing this further with my lawyer.  I have never been so disrespected in my life!

I spoke to Tammy Bell and she was extremely rude just as the previous women were and once again she told me that there is nothing that she can do for me.  I am not the women that she states she is trying to contact and i have had it!  The supervisor above Tammy Bell is Jane Romano and her contact information is (585) 463-2041.  P.O. Box 9315-A Rochester, N.Y. 14604.

I just received a voicemail from their automated dialer giving the 0943 number and saying it was the Offices of Tammy Bell. I promptly called them back and a man named Brandon (he did give me his last name, but out of respect for his politeness I'm not posting it online) answered. I told him I had received a voicemail asking me to call the Offices of Tammy Bell and he informed me that Tammy Bell is his boss, The company name is Mercantile (I asked "Just Mercantile?" and he replied "Yep, just Mercantile.") and their dialer leaves her name, though she rarely takes calls herself. (This is perfectly withing the bounds of the TLA and FDCPA, to the best of my knowledge)

It turned out to be a completely legitimate collection call for a 243.00 medical bill that I owe. Brandon was very polite and answered all my questions without hesitation. I am going to weigh in on the side of them being legitimate, especially since he never pressured me at all for the money. It is a very small balance and to a collector my account is almost inconsequential (I know this because I was one for four years... Go Buffalo).

As for the folks on here who are sure they don't have any delinquent debts, I'd recommend talking to these people anyway. Somebody might have stolen your identity, somebody might have 'stolen' your number, or they are looking for somebody who used to have your number. No matter which one it happens to be, the best way to handle the situation is to speak with them politely and patiently. The more civilly you handle the conversation, the more they'll believe you. The nastier you are the more they will distrust what you tell them. Again, I'm speak from a number of years of collections experience here.

Hope this advice and information helps some or all of you. :)

I just received a phone message on my voicemail at work from a Tanya Ortiz from MAB saying that she's left several messages at my home phone and she was calling about our "arrangement".  When I called back they said that they didnt have any record of my work phone in their system and when they started looking they realized they were looking for someone with a similar last same! How did they get my work phone!  And if they are a collections agency isn't it illegal to contact someone at their place of employment????

No, it is not illegal to call at work. HOWEVER, if you owe a debt and send them a letter in writing stating not to call you at work, they can't. If they do, you can sue them for $1000. Send the letter REGISTERED.

Called the number back and they're looking for someone named Gregory Scott.  The woman was more than nice enough to talk to and she removed the number from the call list.  Do yourself a favor and call them to straighten them out.  She also informed me to give the dialer a couple days to stop calling.
