recieved a text from this number it said it was about my home depot account.  when I called the number the guy said he could look up my account with my SSN I said no thanks sucker

I actually got the same number in a text just yesterday - "70650: Pls press SEND to call CitiCards about your HomeDepot account 877-259-5783. Free MSG. To end alerts reply QUIT. PO Box 183037 Columbus OH 43218" - so I called, but when they asked for personal info I declined, hung up, and called the number on the back of my Home Depot card instead. After talking to the rep, I verified that Citibank actually DID send the text, and that this is something they've just started doing over the past few months. I told the rep that the number in the text was unlisted, and therefore suspicious as a scam. Who knows if they'll list the number or use another number in the future, but the text was actually legit. In the future if I get a text about a credit card, I'll just call the number on the back of the card again...

I did NOT call back or text back

I got the same text and made a $50.00 payment to the # I called back ...Then I called Home Depot to see if they could see the payment and they could.  So not a scam.

I just got a call, and it was linked to the home depot account from that number.  So its legit, usually means you missed a payment, so have a late charge.. oops.

I received the same message. It was linked to my home depot account that was late. I paid $40.00 and then called home depot. The money was sent to my account with no
problems. It was not a scam.

I agree with most above.  It is legit, but has a bad feel about it.  The flow of information is way too one sided and there is no good mechanism for providing verification for the non-standard tollfree number.

It is legit, and there's no bad feel about it as it comes from CitiBank, which handles all the processing for Home Depot. As someone above said, if you call Home Depot you can safely find the exact status of your account.

On the other hand, the reason I got the message about a late payment is that Home Depot never sent a statement out. So I paid up and canceled the account.
