- Jen| 5 repliesGot a call from this number over the weekend. I answered and it was a collection agent calling on behalf of Verizon Wireless wanting me to take care of a balance that they claim that I owe of almost $500.00.
The background -
I switched carriers back in mid September and was expecting a small ETF from Verizon as I was towards the end of the contract. (I had already paid Verizon the full amount of my September bill before it was even due and the switch to the new carrier was also done prior to the due date of the September bill.) Right after porting the numbers over to the new carrier, I tried going online to see if I could see my bill since everything I had with Verizon was always online only. Of course, within a couple of hours Verizon had already cut off all of my online access so I figured I'd have to wait for the mail to get the next statement as I couldn't go online to pay the ETF right away. Nothing came through the mail in September which I figured would be normal since I had just cancelled service. Then nothing in October which still didn't seem strange since my billing cycle was towards the end of the month so I figured maybe it was already in the mail.
On November 3rd, I get a call from this number and it is a collection agent wanting me to take care of this "past due" balance over the phone. The balance is about twice what my calculations were for an ETF so I tell the representative that I'd be happy to pay the balance, but that as I hadn't received any bill, that I would need to see a bill first. The rep told me that they sent out a bill to me on September 23rd and October 23rd to my address (the 23rd was the date of the new billing cycle) and I confirmed my address with the rep (the same address I have had the entire time I have done business with Verizon Wireless) and he insisted that my address was the address that they had sent the statements to. I told the rep that I find it strange that I haven't had any other trouble receiving any other bills from any other company that I do business with and that I've always been very responsible in paying all of my bills early and that I had in fact paid September early and even tried to go online to pay the ETF, but that they had taken away all of my access. The rep agreed and said that once you leave Verizon, they immediately take away access and he could see my payment in September and that Verizon appreciated receiving the payment. Since the rep was insitent that Verizon had sent these two bills to me, I asked if he could please at least e-mail them to me so that I could see where my September payment was applied and see how they were arriving at the figure that they came up with since it was so far off from what my calculations were. The rep told me that he didn't have the ability to see my bills (how was he able to see my payment in September or know that the amount he's requesting me to pay over the phone is even accurate?) and suggested that I go into a Verizon Wireless store and that they should be able to provide me with copies of my bills. (Which I know for a fact that no one in the retail store has access to.) Fast forward a few hours later and lo and behold, there's a statement from Verizon Wireless in my mailbox. I open it up hoping to get some clarity on where they're coming up with their figures and it's nothing but a statement stating that I owe almost $500.00, that according to their records I'm past due, and that they haven't received any money from me since the last billing cycle. Nothing showing where the money I paid in September went or how they came up to the figure that they've arrived at - just a demand for the balance that they say I owe to be paid immediately.
I call the customer service # listed on the bill to see if someone there can help to at least send me a copy of the bill showing my payment in September and how they arrived at their figure, but when I call, the automated system asks for the number I'm calling in reference to which it of course tells me that my number is not affiliated with any of their accounts. The choices after that are for me to press 1 to get new service, 2 if I have a collection notice from Verizon or 3 if I have a collection notice from a third party. I press 2 and a young woman answers, asks me my name and then immediately tells me that she won't be able to help me and can't see anything since their systems are down across all of Verizon.
At this point, I'm not sure what to do. I certainly want to pay what is owed in full, but I think it's only fair to make sure that our figures are accurate and in agreement. I've worked very hard to make sure that I have good credit and the last thing that I want is having my credit destroyed by Verizon if they send me to a third party collection agency or for Verizon to overcharge me and for me to pay extra money that they're not really owed. I'm hoping to try to call them again today to see if someone there can help me to get some clarity on this - if I get the runaround again, I think I'll have no choice but to contact the attorney general since I can't get them to provide me with a copy of an itemized bill showing my payment in September.- Caller: Verizon Wireless - Collections

- MarkI also got a call from this number from someone claiming to be from Verizon. She claimed I had an outstanding bill of $130. I changed my number and service to Sprint the month before. I went online to see what I owed and it had a zero balance. I printed the page and waited two days later. It still said I had a zero balance. So I told this woman that and she insisted I owed money. I'm not paying a dime until I see something that says I owe it. This is how my sister was defrauded out of money she didn't actually owe.

- MacI just got a call from these people yesterday...same deal claiming I owe my activation fee and that they had to shut a old account down ans then charging me for the new setup. It didn't sound right at all and the guy was unable to provide any details or documentation. I refused to call this number back to pay like he suggested...and instead called Verizon through my phone. I spoke with a rep and she said the call I received from the number was "complete and utter B.S." that if it was Verizon they would have your info and be able to provide details. She couldn't find any other acct I would have been attached to and said I ddint owe a thing and that someone was trying to scam me. BeWARE! Don't pay a thing!
- TySimilar stories as above. DON'T PAY!! Hang up and call Verizon if you want to know any balances! "Neisha" said I owed $97.16, yet couldn't explain why I never received a bill. Also stated that she could not email it or provide any details until I gave her my account password. Every time I asked a question, I was put on mute as she was being coached by someone. SCAM!!

- NotFallingForThisScamIt looks like this scam is getting more sophisticated.
I received the same call as everyone else above stating that I owe $40 due to some activation fee. I refused to cooperate by giving them anymore personal information than they already have. Interesting enough they stated they had sent me a bill for the charge. I looked in my junk mail (USPS not email) and sure enough, I had received a $40 bill from what looked like Verizon Wireless.
I called the published VW Customer Service number and they informed me that this was a known Phishing attempt but hadn't seen the scammers using real mail before.- Caller: Verizon Wireless

- RickyThey are still active. The scammers have been leaving messages on my phone for weeks now. I block one number, they move to another. So I finally answered and talked to a real live criminal...I mean customer representative. They have been calling for a Michael Fromer. I told the RLC that there was no one at this address, they were a scam as I had checked with Verizon, and if they were really Verizon to cut my phone off as I wasn't going to pay them anything. We will see how that works.

- tamsynthey called and called and called. tried to get me to pay money after i explained that my balance shows zero online. told them i knew it was a scam. they continued to call back from other numbers. asking for my PIN, etc. agreed to waive "early termination fee" of $350 but said i needed to pay $35 activation fee still. i told them i wouldn't pay anything until i can see it online. told them to never call me again. they did not call back. - MeEitherThis number has called me there or four times today. I was on a plan with them at one time, but under my parents' name. I wasn't the primary number, so of course I wasn't the one paying. I'm glad I checked the number online before doing anything else. I haven't even answered the call.
- irritatedThis is Verizon Wireless' collection department. I am disputing $800 worth of ETFs. They will not stop calling me. They call 4 or 5 times a day. They told me that because they are not a collection agency, that they can and will keep calling me every hour each day until I answer even though I asked them to stop.

- irritatedCaller claimed to be Verizon Wireless trying to collect $40 for activation fee. My account is paid in full with Verizon. I told her thanks but no thanks for the scam and don't ever call my number again.
- DupedWe received daily calls from this number. Finally returned them. They indicated that they wanted to help us with our Verizon bill and asked for our verizon "password." We didn't remember having one, but gave them one that we would have used. They came back saying it was not the right one and asking for others so that they could access our account which showed an overdue balance. As we use automatic payment we became suspicious and asked what their affiliation was with Verizon. They were hesitant--and we realized that we were being "duped." We are reporting this additional "twist" to Verizon. BEWARE--don't give them any personal information.

- Todd| 1 replyVerizon Debt collectors for real it seems. I recently broke my contract with them early to move to another carrier for substancial savings. The soon to be extinct "early contract termination fee" does apply to my two accounts. I don't think it's a scam. Just an slimy debt collectors.

- MikeI just got a telephone call from them as well. I didn't answer it but see the number on my caller ID. I broke my contract with Verizon after 10 years, having no telephone that worked on that number anymore. After Verizon worried me to death, I turned the matter over to the FCC. Things changed after that. Verizon called and thanked me for my years of patronage and asked if there was anything else they could do. Now this shows up on my caller ID. Time to go back to the FCC I guess....
