The Bank (or is it a Collection Agency?) called again. They keep calling once or twice per day. (BTW I paid my bill on Monday in full before they called me the first time - and I told them so on the very first call and every subsequent call, before today)
So this time I was totally cooperative. They wanted MONEY. I said "okay, would you like me to send you a check today?" No, that wasn't acceptable. The guy wanted my checking account routing number and account number so he could dip in and take the money himself. Being cooperative, I said "okay, I'd just like to verify who I am speaking with. Please tell me the Bank's federal tax ID#" Dumbfounded the caller finally said he "has no idea." So I then said, well I just need to verify who this is before I give you access to take money from my checking account." More silence. Then an older sounding fellow got on the line and said he was a supervisor and he just wanted my banking info so he could take out a "whopping $10!" (joke, joke, ha, ha). A Nice Guy, really.
So I said "Sure, I just need to verify that I'm speaking with the bank first." I then asked "Can you tell me the date that I opened the account with the Bank?" This got him annoyed. He hung up on me, and as he did he said "we'll keep calling you."
Before I could IMMEDIATELY get the words out to NOT call me (under the FDCPA rules) he was gone.
The Gall of these banks. They tell customers if someone calls you and asks for your private banking information DON'T BE STUPID, DON'T GIVE IT OUT.
But when the bank themselves calls you they expect the consumer to immediately give out all the information asked for. How is the consumer to know if the caller is an identity theft crook? or the legitimate bank?
