I also received a call on my cell phone, using the same method except they asked for my husband.  I google the name although I do not know about all of you we do not owe any collectors.  My husband is a freak about paying bills on time so I really do not think it is a collection agency.....  Are all these post owing money to someone?

Just had a recording asking for my ex-husband's (20 years ago) ex-wife (divorced 7 years ago).  This is not same phone number that I used 20 years ago, so it's amazing they somehow track down me.  But then again, I get junk mail for her too.  I called them back, asked for my number, asked my name and said they were looking for Judy and that they would remove my number.

Like others on this site, I periodically get a voice mail message beginning mid-sentence "requesting a call back today" and giving me an "account number" which I supposedly need when I call them back. No company name is left, and it sounds like a scam, so I've never called. What are these people doing and why?

We just got this number a month ago and the calls started.  I just called the number because the voice recording that they have been leaving for some time I couldn't recognize the name that the digital voice was trying to say.  I got a VERY nice young lady who confirmed the name of someone who must have had this phone number before us.  She said she made a note of it in the system that it's the wrong number and the calls should stop.  I hope so.  This is the problem with skip tracing data, often the numbers have been changed or folks move and the new receipient ends up with ton's of calls. :-(

This is a company that deals with AT&T.  I know that because I just called the number and the company is closed.  I don't know why they are calling me since my phone is not in collections.  But trust me I will find out, and when I do, I will inform the rest of you.

Received a call from CCA asking if "blank" was available.  I said she wasn't (I didn't say that she didn't live here and why would they call me for her?).  "Blank" is my friend who has never used my phone number for anything.  A "Ms. Lucas" said it was very important that my friend return the call and left the number above with a number to reference when she called back.

My friend called them a few hours later and gave them the reference number.  Someone got on the line and my friend asked what CCA was and what was this about-  they told her to give them her Social Security number and they could tell her.  She told them no, and again asked what type of company was this and what was the call in reference to and they again told her that they couldn't tell her anything without her SS#.  She hung up.

Okay, here's what to do is you're using AT&T and they keep calling you.

First, file a complaint at the BBB: http://reports-boston.bbb.org/Boston/Public/Reports/RR/Report.aspx?i=42183

Call CCA - Collections Company of America - You can use the number they called you with. If it just keeps ringing, just keep letting it ring. Then call again. And again. Eventually, they will answer.
Tell them to stop calling, as the person they are trying to reach no longer has that number. The operator should make a note on the account. (That doesn't mean a whole lot, though.)

Then, call AT&T Customer Support: 1-800-331-0500. Explain to them that you think your phone number is recycled and used to be owned by someone who had been sent to collections (specifically, CCA). The operator at AT&T will make a note on your account, as well.

If the operator doesn't offer to do it, ask him or her to call the Receivables Management office at AT&T, as they're the ones who deal with collections. The person at Receivables Management will know exactly what's going on, as, trust me, you are not the only person to call about this problem.

They should take care of it for you. If you do all these things and they keep calling, repeat these steps and mention that your attorney will be contacting them, should the calls not cease, as it constitutes harassment. That usually does the trick.

Hope that helps.

My husband and I just received a phone call from a woman who identified herself as Gina with CCA.  They were looking for my husband's ex-wife and they were also willing to give me her file number. I asked them to take my telephone number off of their list and they said they would do so.  Does anyone know what kind of collection agency this is? So strange.
