- BS in New Jersey| 2 repliesCall from 877-448-5584 recorded message from Steve saying he was going to serve a summons in 24-48 hours and to call the number for any questions. He did not say who he was calling or what name was on the "summons". He did not say who he worked for and that the call was an attempt to collect a debt Upon calling the number, first Stacey(?spelling) Williams said it was Legal Outsourcing and they were in Rochester, NY. Called back and Chris Copeland said it was BSI, a law firm in Rochester, NY. Last time, I was transferred to Daniel Benson who said I was calling BSI and Associates in Rochester, NY, but he refused to give a physical address. I can't find any info on the supposed names of the company names provided by the individuals, can't find any info on the supposed names of the individuals I spoke with, and there is no info on the phone number provided.

- JayThese scammers called me today threathening me with summons in 24 hours. I cannot find any information on the company He said was calling from BSI Associates, obviously a bogus name. Was clear to me from the get-go this was a scam. They hung up on me when I called back.

- D in WA| 2 repliesI came home to find a message on my answering machine from a Steven Rogers. He didn't say whom it was he was calling for or what business he was calling from. He stated he was scheduled to show up at either my home or place of business within the next 24 hours with a legal summons. And that should he have to show up at my place of business he would have to notify a supervisor or head of security to be a witness. He stated that should myself or my legal representation not contact him within 24 hours it would be considered a failure to appear. Upon returning a call to find out what the hell this was all about, I got an answering machine stating with "Steve" stating I had called BSI...didn't say what BSI was or stood for and that I had called after business hours and I could leave a message. That's when I got online to try to find out what BSI was....and found this page where others had posted that it was a scam. Glad to know as it was a threatening call and very convincing.

- D from WA replies to BS in New JerseySo...did you get a summons? I had the same call with a message on my answering machine. Process servers do not call in advance. They serve summons without you expecting it. They don't generally give courtesy calls.
- BS in New JerseySteven Rogers just called yet again threatening me with a recorded message saying I had not responded to his calls and that I would be served and that I needed to call the number and give my deposition if I wanted this to stop. Same number 877-448-5584. I have never seen this person. But I do find it interesting that Captain America's real name is Steve Rogers....HMMM do you think that Steven Rogers is the real name of the person calling?

- Dame Susan| 4 repliesYes, called several times summoning me. Also by email. What do they want?
- Elspeth replies to D in WATypical scammers - not returning a phone call does not make it a "failure to appear" - what a maroon.
You also NEVER get a heads up if you're going to be served a court summons - the process server just shows up, unannounced. Please do report your caller to the FTC, FCC, FBI and your state's Attorney General. - Elspeth replies to BS in New JerseyAh yes. It's a PO Box - no physical location specified. The website gives a lot of fluff and doesn't actually tell you what they do. They state they've worked with Fortune 500 companies, but give no names. And there are no links or phone extensions for any supposed "department" or employees. In other words, very shady.
- Elspeth replies to Dame Susan| 3 repliesIf it's legitimate, they would contact you by good old USPS mail, not email. And they wouldn't call you first either. However, since they've done so, they only have five days from the date of their first call to MAIL you a debt validation letter showing that you owe a debt and that they have the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal or failure to mail the DV letter is a violation of federal law (the FDCPA).
- Dame Susan replies to ElspethThis is what surprised me, I have no debt, except for mortgage. Thanks for the info. Cheers
- Mad as all get outThis company is a scam. They seem to have a copy of your credit report and all information given is off your report. These fools called me last week and got a voice mail about a summons. Then called me yesterday stating I owed 6000 dollars in debt to a credit card that I have not used and should have been paid 4 years ago. Then they said that I owed 4000 but would settle for 904.56 and they would take payments. They are using scare tactics to get you to settle on a account they do not even have. I looked up my credit report and contact the company myself and talked with their actual collection agency to verify. I then called they bicoastalsolutionsincorporated and stated they were fruad and they are to never call me back again and that I have reported them to all credit bureaus and placed a complaint with the better business bureau. These people when they called never stated the call was being recorded nor named the company they were working for which is required by law. I had to ask them for the company name and where they were located.

- The-Nine replies to Elspeth| 1 replyQuestion - I understand about the 5 day thing but does the first call have to make contact or just a call? Like if they start calling on day 1 and don't make contact until day 4, does the 5 day rule apply to day 1 (no contact) or day 5 (contact)?
- Confused| 4 repliesI got a call from this number today, same message as the rest of you received about a summons coming my way and to please call this number with questions. For reasons I won't get into, I had cause to believe this might be legitimately related to another matter entirely so I called back to get more information. Long story short, the person on the phone said the call was in regards to a very old "debt" I thought had been disputed and resolved years ago. He told me that I was being SUED, but that he could offer me a settlement to make it all go away today. And as another poster mentioned, he never stated the name of the company until I asked, never said it was an attempt to collect a debt, or that the call was being recorded. We are a military family and move around a lot, but this same old bogus debt seems to pop up every few years or so; it's been more than 3 years since the last time I heard anything about it and initiated the process of disputing it through the credit agencies. I have received NOTHING in the mail regarding this matter, EVER. Thankfully, I found this forum and others like it while I was on hold and immediately hung up before giving out any of my information. Then I checked all three of my credit reports. This supposed debt or the charge-off does not appear on any of them, and there are no public records on file against me (i.e. pending court cases or lawsuits). While it was my name and information they had (unlike some of you who have gotten calls for people you don't know) and I did recognize the account he said he was calling about, there's no way this is for real, right? Was I right to hang up and ignore these calls going forward (as is my intention)?

- Alfalfa replies to Confused| 2 repliesThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- Got me tooI just received a message from "Charles Clay w/ Legal Outsourcing", all the same lines as above. I called back, concerned as I live in a very nice neighborhood, have a really good job and don't want someone coming to serve me at either place. The guy who answered was able to pull my name using my phone number but then put me on hold to "go pull the file from the attorney" and never came back to the phone.
I've been in default collections for about 15 years. I kind of home they call back ;) It's been a slow morning - I could use a little excitement!- Caller: Legal Outsourcing

- ConfusedNow that I'm thinking about it, I should maybe also mention that my personal info was compromised in that Target security breach. My bank was really quick to cancel my debit card and issue me a new one, and there hasn't been any fraudulent activity on my account itself...but could this be related?
