    A woman called from an unknown number and said she would be by on 9/1 to serve papers but that if I would like to call 877-450-3710 and settle this .... So I called the number back and it was a recording " this is invest...mumbles Jon" and it asked for my name and number - I get calls saying different information about a claim against me and I'll be served papers, haven't hot any yet - and the Lady called herself Sheryl something and said she'd bevy on Monday 9/1 between 12-3:00 pm - sounds like a comcast app.  Anyways this call was on my voicemail on 8/26 and it always happens at the end or the beginning of a month - they did not state who they were with or what debt it pertained to and I have received nothing in the mail. So I will wait a see if I am served because that's the ONLY way I'll know if this is Legit

    tired of these calls!
    I got the same call, well, I get several of them, from different people.  I always let them go to voicemail  The latest is from "Daniel Carter, a registered process server" to tell me he is scheduling a time to serve me papers, and although he's sorry he can't give me his personal cell phone, he is giving me the number of the outfit that created the papers he's serving, which is 877-450-3710.  I won't be calling that number, and no legitimate process server calls the person in advance.  The whole concept of service of process is the element of surprise.  People won't hang around waiting to be served if there is really a reason for it.  So, no, no one has ever shown up to 'serve' me, although they will leave me messages after the date they said they'd be there telling me I wasn't home or wasn't at work, both are lies.  It's the fake process server who wasn't there.  So, just ignore these calls.  If it were a legitimate civil action, you would not be forewarned about service, and a case would have to be filed first.  If you have any concerns, check your county or state court records to see if anything has been filed.  That will assure you it's a scam to scare you into calling that number and then someone will hound you to pay a debt you don't owe!

    I received a call from this number from a person called Allen Roberts and identified himself as a Court Respresentative and said there was a case against me and that he needed to serve papers.  Well, I called the courts in my county and they said they have no case file against me.  I  called the number and a person and I dentified himself as John the paralegal (who is very foul mouthed).  The county courts called me back and said the company is called NPS a paralegal/collection agency.  My county does not call in advance to serve you papers.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
