- Heather| 4 repliesI've received two calls and the past 3 days and it is some scary sounding woman on their stating that they are searching for me and information for my whereabouts and by law they are authorized to contact all my references thing goes on to say they can contact my references by law but never says what company or what it's about and to my knowledge I don't owe anyone anything....whaaaaat?
- Mrs Pederson replies to HeatherPretty sure its a scam. I got the same message and I don't owe anyone money either. Legally, collectors of any kind aren't allowed to threaten or intimidate and I'm pretty sure a legit debt collector would leave a company name and some details.

Stated they could send me proof of me owing this only if I give them my credit card information first. I told them to get real that they would not get that information if this is truly I debt I owe to garnish my paycheck. Which he said would be worse since then they can tack on fees. Told him didn't care and told him not to call my number and again and the hung up on him.

- BigAThis is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

- Lotacats| 1 replyGot that same "We're looking for you" call. That woman's voice is computer generated. Sounds spoooooooky. I'm on disability and watch my pennies too close to not know where each one goes....I owe no one. Great info, BigA. I read up on some of what collectors have to do and they are the ones who have to jump thru some hoops. I saw this one lawyer add that threatens the callers because they break so many laws. Here are some common FDCPA violations perpetrated by debt collectors:
Contacting a debtor who is represented by an attorney.
Failing to warn a debtor that the communication is from a debt collector and that any information obtained will be used to collect a debt.
Failing to warn on all subsequent communications that they are from a debt collector.
Calling the debtor an unreasonable number of times daily or after they have been instructed to stop calling.
Using profane, foul, or obscene language.
Making racial, religious, or sexual slurs.
Yelling or screaming at the debtor.
Engaging in name calling.
Falsely threatening a lawsuit.
Falsely threatening to ruin a debtor’s credit.
Could be fun to sue them. There are more protection for us, the victims, then for them.. Creeps. A computer voice isn't even real people. Probably makes auto calls for a period of time then waits for those taking the bait.- Call type: Debt collector
