- Nobody| 3 repliesReceived multiple calls from some lady that I could barely understand, decided to finally call them back after they called my sister. Verified the last 4 of SS# and I said let me guess you are saying I took out a payday loan and the man said yes. I said I never had one and he said you did in 2008. I said the statute of limitations for debt in PA is 4 years, this is an 8 year old debt. he said for fraud it is 3-10 years, which I knew was a lie too. I said I want some proof, he said when the loan was taken you received proof. I said I know you guys are just trying to scare me and I am not scared. You want to scare people into paying things that either are not theirs or too old to collect on. he advised me he is just trying to settle before it goes to court and now that he had made contact with me he will have to advise his client that I am not willing to cooperate. I said if you expect me to hand money over to you without proof you are crazy. He told me that if I make a small payment or enter an arrangement they would then send proof. I said oh, so you can restart the statute clock on the debt? I don't think so. I asked for his information, like address and such and he gave me the same line I have seen on here multiple times, our main office is in Miami but we have offices all through the US. I said no, I want your physical address, he said we are not allowed to give that out. I said thanks so much, tell your client to take me to court and do not call me or anyone else again about this. Thanks and hung up. If you are not willing to give me proof of my debt, just try to scare me into paying it and then not even give me your information...you are a scam! No thanks, I straight up told him I felt sorry for him, I mean everyone has to work I guess. BTW, he had a thick foreign accent as well. Scammers!! They call on 484-246-5875 which is a local number for me and then ask me to call back on 877-540-5129 and 877-583-0989.
- Caller: RC Associates
- Call type: Debt collector
- Alfalfa replies to NobodyGood for you! No debt validation, no debt. That's how that works.
How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - Vonnie replies to NobodyI just received a message that had the same information, I have received these before and I know enough to know that this is a scam. I also receive an email about every two months from a Jason Walker that is about the same as you have discussed above. I have gotten to the point that I only answer calls from whom I know is calling me. The one that I did answer before this one today, told me the same thing when I asked for an address, said that their main office was in Miami, but had offices throughout the US. They also said that I would be arrested in 2 hours if I did not set up a payment with them. Well, no one has showed up yet to arrest me! They can't even tell me who the so called debt is from. Definitely scammers!!
- Jon replies to NobodyI had the exact situation. Though they called my step mom. Thank you for posting. Same phone numbers as you provided as well.
