they also call from 713-322-7780. Claiming if I do not pay they will file fraud charges against me. If it really is a previous past due account I have, I will pay it....Been hit by getting my work hours reduced to less than 20/hrs per wk and have 2 children to take care of, rent, food, etc. I asked for name of company, they would not give it to me. All they would say..... it was 2 guys and each one would put me on hold in between talking to both of them......I offered to pay $80/month, that is all I can afford right now, and really can't even afford to pay that much.....they refused that amount per month.....said I had to pay a MIN. of $160/month, while still not giving me the name of the company I supposedly owe money to. SO I WILL NOT PAY!!

This company called me at work today. They claim I have a debt that is almost 2 years old. When he described the debt it is not from any account I opened. They refused to validate the debt and said that the original creditor had tried contacting me (they did not and I have never heard of the original creditor). Really not sure what do to. I didn't verify their info, but they had a lot of personal information. They told me if I went to a website (openconsumer.info) that I could put in my claim number and see the information about the debt. They had my email address, former address, last 4 of my social. After checking my credit report, this debt is not on there. Really worried now.

Common extortion by criminals in an attempt to scare you into paying.  Read this:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
