API "pre-legal verification." They gave a "case number" to sound legitimate. They were calling relatives of my relative. Complete harassment. The 'pre-legal verification' is B.S. that they tell people to sound official. Don't talk to these people! Debt collectors!

I had a previous debt that I let go for over a year because of illness.  Yesterday, James Leo from API called me and told me the account went to pre-litigation.  When I called the original creditor (LoanMe) who gave me the loan, they gave me the phone number to who they sold it to.  That company then gave me API's phone number, as they again sold it to them last month.  James explained that in order to file a judgment on these accounts, they must own it.  They also sent me an e-mail showing the verification of my debt.  Unfortunately, these guys are legitimate. According to LoanMe, they do sue on accounts who refuse to pay voluntarily. Pretty much everything I was told by API was verified to be correct.  As much as I hate to admit it, they did have a right to collect on my account.

To make a long story short, I paid the settlement amount that they offered me.  Later that day I got an e-mail stating the payment was made and applied to my account and that I have a zero balance. I made sure a copy of the letter was also sent to LoanMe. Do your homework and follow the trail, however, at the end of the day these guys are the ones handling the debt.  I thought it was illegal to sell and buy debt but it's not.  I had to end up paying as I am in the process of getting a home and couldn't have a judgement on my credit report.

API gets phone numbers of people you no longer have contact with and harass them for your contact information.their actions are horrible and should only be directed at the person they are trying to contact and not the innocent people they are disturbing with their annoying phone calls.

API - Pamela recently represented herself to me as a "mediator" from the "legal department" representing her "client."  Everything she said to me was a lie...and actually illegal.  Collectors are not allowed to represent themselves as government officials (mediators) or lawyers (legal department).  I was threatened and offered a ridiculous settlement.  I declined and reported them to the Consumer Federal Protection Bureau.

They are scammers.  And I suspect you are a shill..  There is no  such thing as "pre-litigation".  It is a term used to try to scare money out of their victims.  It's just scammer double talk.  You don't simply "file a judgment".   You have to go to court and follow proper legal procedures where all parties are given their say.  No case has ever been filed .  And e-mail debt validation is basically worthless.  Proper
debt validation is sent by US mail. API is NOT legitimate.  It is a NY debt scamming operation that no one is able to locate.

    Try again.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking),  the only thing they understand.
