How the scam works:

(with video below) If you ever receive a phone call from your local prison on your house phone and the operator tells you to press 1 to receive a collect call, don’t accept it (unless your buddy is arrested on a regular basis and you know he always calls). Many victims accept these collect calls because they don’t know who might be on the other side.

How does this scam work? Whenever allowed to make phone calls, real inmates dial random numbers until they find somebody willing to help. As soon as the victims answer, the scammer comes in with a quick apology for disturbing them followed by an emotional short story, such as being thrown in jail because he beat up a guy who assaulted his daughter, an hour ago.
 
The prisoner will ask the victim to call a number where supposedly his daughter is, to make sure she is ok. He will say that the number is impossible to reach from the prison he is in, or that they are not allowed to call cell phones. People fall for this scam as they think they are doing a good deed.

In reality, what victims do when dialing the number provided is just… call-forwarding their own telephone lines. This way, after getting you to forward the number, the scammer can call anywhere he wants, without being charged.

In a different variation of the scam, the callers cannot even be jail mates. They could be regular scammers trying to make phone calls on your dime. For example, they would pick names from the phone book with specific ethnicity and tell the operator they are part of their family.

It's a call from family or friend. They need more money on the phone acct.

I have no one who is in Jail. None of my family would be in jail. So, why would someone be calling me unless they wanted to use my phone for a free call.

I do not know who is in a correctional facility

The company name is Securus. They handle calls for correctional facilities. I get these calls all the time because my good for nothing son is in jail, all the time. 28 years old, been arrested 29 times. Total loser.

I just got a call from this number.  I don't know anyone who is in jail, I smell a scam.

Well I don't think is a scam cuz my friend is locked up n I heard his name..it better be legit cuz I just put money on the account 😒

My son and I have been receiving this number several times during the day. We know of only one person who might be in jail, but I am not going to accept any type of calls. No one knows it could be a scam. I use to work in a prison, and know the inmates call numbers at random to take part in a scam. Inmates have accounts set up by whomever so they can make calls to their family. When I say the account is set up it is done by someone else, when they run out of money they can not longer make calls. When talking to whomever on the phone, the calls be done 3-way, so I would suggest that no one accepts any type of calls from any toll free number. Block the calls from your phone. If you think someone might be in jail, google in the Law enforcement department for the area you think it could be, and get the phone number, then ask for the jail, and then call and ask if there is a person by whatever name you think it could be in jail. It is the safest way of finding out.

I don't know anyone in jail and I get calls from this number. It happened three times this week and I don't answer it.

Must be a scam.  Know no one in Jail.  Didn't answer and won't as I don't answer calls I don't know.  Very irritating!

I don't answer any calls that I'm not familiar with.  As the posts say, this is someone from jail.  I don't know how I can block calls such as these.  They should be against the law.  Do not call list does not work!
