African American sounding lady named "Andrea" left a voicemail claiming to be the Department of Veterans Affairs, calling about my Dependency Claim. I called back, she answered and said: "You never been married before right?" I said no. She then said "Oh I thought this was a dependency claim." I told her: "Well I am married NOW. Not before." Then she asked for my wife's Social Security Number. I told her the truth that my wife is not a United States Citizen and does not have a SSN. She said: "Okay thank you." Then she hung up.

Caller stated she was VA Rep.   Needed dependants social security numbers.   Totally false.  This was not the VA.

I called the main number for the VA at 800.827.1000 and they were able to verify that three messages were left for me regarding my claim to add additional dependents.  They also were able to verify that the number 877.764.0009 is a legitimate number for the VA Claims center.  If you are uncertain about giving out your dependent/ssn information like I am, go the VA website to get the main number and call the main number to verify the legitimacy of the caller. I do this for all incoming calls regarding my personal information.  I always call the main number for the organization back.

I had a recording from a woman on my answering machine from this number who advised me on the recording that I had one more thing to clear on a dependent college benefit prior to it being accepted and for me to contact this woman ASAP. Regardless of any of the comments from above that are for the positive in this numbers reference, this number is anything from being positive.  This is a scam looking for your info to steal your identity. DO NOT under any circumstances give out your info to anyone from this number. I notified my local city and County Vet benefits services and both of them told me this number has NOTHING to do with Veterans Affairs. Furthermore, there is no Vet Affairs Benefits Services in Maine.  If you try to call the number back, most likely you'll be connecting to a recording. Ignore it. DO NOT leave any info about yourself or your claim. If you need to know anything about a claim based on medical benefits or dependent college apps, talk to your local or county Veterans Affairs Office only, they can tell you what you need to know in seconds.

I just spoke with (called)  the VA Directly at 800-827-1000, in regards to the legitimacy of the phone number
877-764-0009 . This phone number is in fact with the Veterans Administration and it is the Dependency Claims Service Center. If you do not feel comfortable calling the 877 number, the VA representative I spoke with stated that you should call the 800 number and they can take the information from you that is needed to proceed with your claim

The number is definitely the VA. I called and asked what it was about, said they needed to confirm information about my wife's divorce. Gave ONLY my VA file number.

I got the same call and I freaked out. I gave the caller my last four and my date of birth so I panicked and put locks on all my credit Agency reports.  The next day I verified that this was legitimate by calling the VA directly. This is not a scam. In Navy Boot Camp they call you Chuck. The most powerful person on your ship is probably the chief boatswains mate.  In the fleet nobody gives a damn about your gig line.  You can find HT's sleeping in the angle irons, but who cares because their recruiters lied to them about being welders and not turd chasers. Calling someone shipmate is a way of disrespecting them not respecting them. Now you know I'm real and so was this call. Don't panic like I did.

Received a call from the number asking to call them back for a "pending dependent verification update". Read these reviews and was confused so I called my local VA who said that it sounded legitimate but they were "not sure" and suggested that I "call my regional office or go in person to the VA benefits office". I called the regional office of the VA who told me that it sounded legitimate and that they did indeed need to verify my dependent information, BUT that I couldn't do it over the phone and that it needed to be done in writing. They were going to mail me the form or could email it to me and I could fax it back to them.

My advice is to call your regional VA office to ensure that you do indeed need to have your dependent information verified, AND THEN have them mail you the form or go in person to the local VA benefits office.

I tried calling the number and it was indeed an answering service. I didn't leave a message.

Don't do anything unless it's in writing and even then, be wary and vigilant.

Dumb of me to answer their questions hang up and then ask myself why did I do that and wonder if it was real or not.

Very dumb of the VA to employ that tactic to verify dependent status when they could  refer you to the website and have you verify your information there or verify your information with an in person visit l.

Real or not… Dumb all the way around.

They called to verify if my dependents remained the same.  Only asked that I verify my branch of service and were able to repeat the name of my dependents.  Simple and quick.  Not Spam.
