Received a prompt from what appears to be AOL indicating that my account may have been compromised and suggesting I call this number 877-786-0722 to change my account password.
Is this ligit?

got the same message prompt from AOL and telling me my account has been compromised and to call this number.

Yes, this is legitimate, and yes AOL (America OnLine) does service customers via an off-site location.

To avoid a frustrating call to this number, if possible, go to another provider and type AOL.com for a simple and fast fix.

Yes it is - the number is the AOL service number - my account had been compromised, I called this number, the only questions asked were ones already included in my account, they provided a temporary password access enabling me to re-enter my account and reset the controls.

I do not believe this is legit because I do not have an AOL account and I received this with link embedded. If this is REALLY legit, how can you explain why I received this and I have NEVER had an AOL account. ????????

Was emailed by AOL saying that my account may ha e been compromised and to call 877 786 0722, their member service department, where I must reset my password.  I do not get a reply at that number.  I'm afraid that this is not legit but what to do about it?  At this time, I can't read my mail or send any mail.

it is legit.  but just call your regular aol phone  # to get it sorted out. Tons of people got this same message. Something with an aol server was down.  Same thing happened to me. it should be all sorted out now.

but if u do get this, that your acct. was compromised, just call the regular phone #, it is faster. and they will tell u that they are familiar with the problem. and all is cool.

It looked real and fishy at the same time? I reentered my normal password and everything was fine.

I called the above number and was connected to a representative in India. When I politely asked to speak to an American agent I was told they cannot do that. My understanding is that all foreign service reps MUST be allowed to transfer you to an American based representative by law. I was told this is not an option. Why???

I received the same message - tried to call the number posted and got a recording saying all representatives are busy and it would be a 30 minute wait, had approximately 15 seconds of muzak then nothing. (a disconnect?)

A couple of weeks ago, as I signed on to AOL, I received a request to fill out a short survey from "AOL" and receive a free gift card from one of several national companies.  I foolishly filled out most of the questions, then decided I no longer wanted to give any more information.  I quit!  With in 15 minutes, I started receiving phone calls from numerous tell-a-marketers. I am now receiving 10 - 20 spam mails daily.

I think it is time to cancel my subscription to AOl!

I received the same message. Called the number and was connected to a "gentleman" who barely spoke English. He said my account had been "hacked" and requested access to clear it up. I, like an idiot, granted the permission. He asked that I shut down any other computers (I only have one) and then showed me all the data that was being "transferred"... even as we spoke!!! He had done a directory, which shows every file on your computer and scrolls until it gets to the bottom. He tried to convince me this I was being hacked "even as we speak" and then wanted $399.99 to clean up my computer!! I told him I was 66 years old and retired.. no way could I afford that... I told him I'd just toss this computer in the trash and get a new one. He then told me the problem wasn't with the computer, it was my wireless server.. I told him I could throw THAT in the trash as well... He brought the cost down to $99 with a 3-month guarantee... I asked him if he was with AOL and he said, in a snotty tone, "Yes, that is why I am helping you." I told him that, years ago I had the same problem and AOL reset my password for free!! He said, "Oh... I can do that for you and will do it now. However, you have a virus and I am unable to fix that. I will now transfer you to a third party." I told him to just leave it alone. Took it to my computer guru and he cleared out the virus but, instead of downloading aol desktop, he set it up to the internet version and it won't let me sign in... I'm ready to go back to just phone calls and typewriters!!

AOL does not maintain this website. You are going to have to contact them directly.

Hello My account josephelad@aim.com is block l need help to regain my account back

so i got blocked from accessing my own email due to suspicious activity, i can not reset my password, as it asks me to provide US mobile number or Zip code address.. but since i live in Sweden, this is not possible.. it also asks to call 1-877-786-0722, but i can not afford the risk of having to be sat waiting in a phone que that may end up getting very expensive.. it seems they have made it extremely difficult to get any actual real help.. so any suggestions would be nice.. as for phishing attempts, i would not be surprised if there is a scam up and running already, with a variation of the real number.

I called AOL and they said I had a slow computer and they would fix it  and reset the password. Well, they cleaned the computer but were never able to reset my password. Now  they want $399.99 . So,  what do I owe them  for just cleaning my computer.
