Called and said it was sheriff Jensen from my local police department. .said he had pending charges from a payday loan that i didn't pay back...he said he didnt have anyother information and would transfer me to the person who could take the payment....i got a patrick boyle he asked for a credit card .....i told them that i didn't have the money he said that he would file the charges and i would be arrested... i was convinced that it was real because the original phone number was for my local police department .. so i set up a payment plan and today could only pay 100 of the 329 they were asking for...he said if i didnt have the rest of the money on monday they would file the charges.....my sister thought it was a scam so she called the local police department and there is no detective Jensen. ...when i call back the number it is the eastern division....

    Sorry you were scammed.

A phone call from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

Recieived call today from this number 877-920-7708 from an alleged Investigator  " John Sing? " (last name was garbled as he spoke very fast and inconclusive).  Said he was calling for " me "  regarding a CHECK FRAUD.  Now, considering I dont write checks and havent in quite sometime.  I knew this could not be legit.  Fast talker this guy - rattled off some "Pre-Trial Docket# " for Los Angeles County....  Because i work for an extremely valued Law Firm, and am a legal adminstrator, I used my 30+ years of training and did my own investigation.  Result - there IS NO SUCH John Sing, but rather a call center with several operators repeating the same dialog, most in a foreign (possibly pakistanian) type english, all asking for up front credit card information to a " supposed " debt owed.  Illegally threatening to process for further fraud if you dont pay up immediately.  Not True...  Furthermore, caller did not identify what company he represented, nor the agency he yielded from,  inaudible name, rudeness, could not clarify nor confirm any documentation he supposedly had in his possession. #BEWARE #SCAMMERS #CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT WIPEOUT!!!!

I also received calls from this jerk.  He asked for someone I didn't know then tried calling off other names.  When I refused to have any further conversation he yelled just tell me your cup size and hung up.

Never ever verify or confirm anything.  Since when is being debt is a crime and paying back payday loans definitely isn't a crime.

    Really!!!
