This is  the National Rifle Association as the recording stated when I called the number back.  Have been getting a number of calls in the last month from the National Rifle Association or it may be National Recovery Associates scamming the number as mentioned in other posts for other numbers similar to this one.

We had two calls ostensibly from this number in one week, the second one this morning. We didn't pick up.  For the past 2 weeks or so we've had calls with displayed numbers said to be associated with the NRA. Thus it is highly likely that it is National Recovery Associates. We just got a new call blocker yesterday but wasn't close enough to the phone in time to block them this morning. Since all "toll-free" displays indicate that the caller is hiding their real number and identity, we plan on blocking every one of those parasites after they call.

I got tired of all these calls and bought me a good Call Blocker. Can now block individual calls, area number calls and block ID names. I like the Digitone.

It is the National Rifle Association.I called back and listened to the message. On it, the messages stated to hear more information, press 1. Then there was a statement about the NRA. Afterwards the message stated "If you do not want any more calls from this organization, press 1, which I did. then the message was "although it take 30 days to remove your number from our list, we will do our best to keep you from getting any more calls"

NRA.  I told them I'm blocking them as soon as I hang up and if they really need to reach me they'll have to pry my call blocker from my cold dead hands.....

I decided to sleep in a little later than usual after getting in late from a social gathering with some relatives I'd never met before. This 888-253-5089 caller, which you all have IDed as the NRA, rang me at 8:23 a.m. arousing me from a deep slumber and thereby leaving me awake and agitated. Thanks to your riotorously funny reply, I have a grin rather than a frown. That overwrought NRA promo by Charlton Heston always cracks me up, but used in the context you just used it, it is knee-slapping funny.    Thanks for sharing your razor sharp wit.

People, while 888-253-5089 may well be a phone number to the National Rifle Association, I seriously doubt that they would be making these types of calls.  Have you ever heard of spoofing?  It's not hard at all to do it with the right service.  Yes, the CID may be saying it's from 888-253-5089 and when you call them back you actually get the NRA.  But the number is most likely spoofed causing you to get all mad at the NRA when they have nothing to do with the call.  Just block the number if you can and don't get your panties all in a bunch over it.  Unfortunately, these types of calls are a fact of life nowadays.  The best way to combat this is never answer these types of calls, never call them back and block them if you can.  If you think registering your phone numbers on the Do Not Call registry will stop it, you are sadly mistaken.

You dumbass.  It's NOT the National Rifle Association.  The spammers are spoofing the number.  If you don't understand spoofing, Gogle it.

Hi Gogle.  What does it matter who it is?  They still deserve attention here.  Even if you are from the NRA and trying to confuse the issue for some unknown reason.

I answered the call and when I asked them who they were, they told me they were with the NRA.  When I asked what NRA stood for they told me the National Recovery Associates.  They were wanting to talk to my ex-daughter-n-law about a credit card debit she had skipped out on 9 years ago.  Told them they had the wrong number and then hung up the phone.  They have been calling my number 3 or 4 times a month for years.  They can keep calling for the next 20 years and it won't get them any where.

    No, they can't.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
