    HI Adam:

I just received a call from that number, at 12:20 p.m. EST today, February 18, 2011. They called my cell phone and, instead of a voice message, left a text message. They called from Orlando, Florida (407/803-3587). I searched this number out thru anywho.com and it is a cell number. I called the "888" number from my land line. The girl who answered asked "is this Martha" (presumably, via caller ID she knew who I was).  I asked her who called me/who she was, and all she would say was she was from "employment verification". She called about an application I submitted for a particular clerical position. I asked her for more details, as I have been applying to dozens of places. She said she was calling on behalf of an employer, and either she could/would not tell me who the employer was, or she did not know. She was not all that pleasant, I thought. She wanted to verify I had submitted an application (again, to where????) and wanted further information. Being that she was so vague, and being that there was no voice message left, I got suspicious. I suggested that since she did not want to provide information to me (she made a snotty remark about how I called her, then I explained about the text message telling me to call the "888" number), perhaps she could e-mail me (anyone with an application or resume from me would have that info). She said never mind - she will pass the position on to someone else.  I Googled "employment verification, Orlando, Florida" and came up with nothing. When I simply searched by the "888" number, I found you, Adam, and I think someone else wrote in too. Don't know if this is some sort of scam, but perhaps the above info will be helpful to you. I did not try calling the "407" number.

    Hi Renee:

I just replied to Adam's message about this mysterious phone number (I made a very detailed reply).  I noticed in your comments, you mentioned craigslist.  I have been applying for jobs off of craigslist, but the West Palm Beach section.  I have been applying for Administrative Assistant positions and, as you know, most all of these jobs give no clue as to who is seeking an employee, etc.

Well, if you, me and Adam are all seeking employment, perhaps we can start our own detective agency if we figure out what this is all about?

This has got to be a hoax.  They just left me a text message too @ 10:40 am(PST).  I as well have been applying for jobs off of craigslist to but in San Diego section.  Also for administrative assistant positions.  This is the risk we take I guess when looking for jobs on craigslist.

SCAM!! These people will text you in regards to a job you have applied for on craigslist and ask you to call the 888 number. They wont say what company they are associated with and ask personal questions. In my case they texted me from 424-272-4814, today Feb 18, 2011 at 11:15 am PST.

Yes, unfortunatley I am having to search craigslist for employment opportunities and it's creepy!!  I received the same text asking to call 888-272-4814 regarding the job I applied for.  I figured it was a scam, so I just texted back, "Thank you but if I do not receive a call for an interview regarding a position I applied for, I am not interested".  BTW, this was for a position I applied for in the Orlando area and I received the text today 2/18/11.  I wish you could tell the difference between the real thing, employment agencies and a scam :-(

I also received a text from this number today and have been applying to admin jobs via craigslist in San Diego.  Because they said they were a "third party verfier" (!?!) and couldn't tell me what position I applied for, I immediately got suspicious.   CREEPY!

Hooray to all of us for checking into this before giving out any PERSONAL info!  :)

Got the text this morning. I sent resumes to positions I found on Denvers craigslist. Thought it was strange to get a text and not an email so I googled it and found this...

My boyfriend got a text from this number regarding a driver position he applied for in Spokane, WA. Boooo on fake jobs. His was also thru Craigslist. Incidently, the text identified it as a driving job. The phone number 801-386-6793 is where the text came from, and the 888-272-4814 number is where they told him to call. Good luck on your job hunts everyone!

I just received the the same text message from a 407-803-3587 telling me they reviewed my application for the position I was looking for, and since I've sent out quite a few resumes I found it weird that they didn't give any specifics. Also the number 888 just looked funny so I decided to look it up and found this...SO glad I did not call them. I'm in the hillsborough area and they used an orlando area code to make it look credible but now I know it's not! They're all just sending out texts within the past 2 days, I hope noone falls for it....

They are hitting Phoenix too!  I have received this text, and also another inviting me to post on a different job site.

They have our numbers now, and will probably sell them to all kinds of text messenger services.
