I would like to know if this insurance is the real deal, will it really pay for pre-exsisting conditions. or is there like a year or two before it will start to pay, right now i have a discount program that cost alot more than
what this cost and it is suppose to be health insurance. please reply back
if you know.

Just for your information, there are new health care products called Mini-med plans.  they are insurance, but pay a lot less than full coverage, but better than discount plans.  You might want to check into them.

I WORKED FOR THIS COMPANY AND IT IS A MINI MED PROGRAM THAT PAYS A SPECIFIC $ AMOUNT PER BENEFIT. IT IS CERTAINLY NOT MAJOR MEDICAL AND CUSTOMERS NORMALLY HAVE LOTS OF PROBLEMS WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE. THIS LIMITED COVERAGE CERTAINLY DO NOT COVER CATASTROPHIC.

Rochelle,

I am not sure why you would make such a general and false statement about our "customer service". We receive about 1000 calls each day to our Member Service team and the vast majority of our Members are very pleased with our customer service.

If there is any Member who is not satisfied in any way, I am also personally available to help resolve any reamining issues.

Heather,

Go to www.hccua.org for a specific description of the benefits for each insurance plan. It will also give contact information to receive pricing information for the programs.  In addition to defined benefits insurance plans, every HCCUA Member has a number of other possible benefits as well, depending upon which program is selected, including things like identity theft protection, legal services, telephone consults with medical doctors, telephone counseling, and more.

I am the Executive Director of HCCUA - the Health Care Credit Union Association mentioned in this discussion thread.  The insurance coverage advertised on TV that is being discused here is underwritten by Pan Amercian Life Insurance. They are a very reputable company that has been in existence for over 95 years. The identity of the insurance company was inadvertently left off of a number of copies of the ad that ran on various TV channels. That was impropoer but not intentional and was immediately corrected as soon as it was discovered.

The Complete Choice Plans are group hospital indemnity plans that are one of the many benefits that our Association offeres to its members. We continue to receiove very positive responses from our Members who have elected this benefit.  I think some of the confusion is that these are not Major Medical policies, but they are fully insured plans that are affordable for most families and offer important copverage. If you want to learn nmore about them, go to www.hccua.org.

I signed up and received the packet in the mail. Red Flag to me, I will never pay again to recieve info in the mail. But I wanted and needed health care for my family. After seeing the benefits, I can do better out of my own pocket. It was a ridiculously small amount. And at 240 a month, I could save up more than I would receive in benefits. Anyway I spent 100 membership sign up, along with the 240. And after review I canceled. And that process seemed very sketchy at best. I had to email cancel to cancel@hccua.org and I would see my return in a month. I guess in that time they have invested your money and turned a profit and then send you your refund. Anyway I still have not seen my refund and never got a confirmation email of my intent to cancel.

I am in the same situation with this company. Shortly after reviewing the benefits we were to receive, we canceled the policy. We were told that we would recieve our refund within 30 days. It has been 32 days since the cancellation and still no refund. What's worse is that after contacting them to ensure ourselves that they had recieved the cancellation email, in which they did, they took out another $240. There explanation for doing so was: "We don't have record of your cancellation in our system." Then why are we waitng on a refund that you say should arrive within 30 days, which is already past due! The represenative avoided the question. Four different times we've spoke to this company about this issue, and all four times we got different explainations for our difficulties. This company is either very unproffessional or a bonified scam. Whatever they are we are pursueing legal action.

Aaron,

I do not know your last name, so I had no way to confirm for certain that you have received your refund. I will assume that you have, unless you call me at (866) 258-6930 to ask for assistance.

I know that it is frustrating to have to wait as long as 30 days to receive a refund, but that is not primarily due to our part of the process. It is because you either charged your enrollment on a credit card or had us debit funds from a bank account. It is these systems that need the extra time to complete the processing of refunds.

I have serious doubts about this being a reputable company. When I lost my job and health insurance for me and my son, I signed up for HCCUA. After reviewung the info sent to me I deceided to cancel. I called within the 30 day trial timeframe ,and was told it would take four to six weeks to refund my initial payment. I had no problem with this. However, two weeks later I discovered they took $299.95 from my checking account. I called right away for them to return that money because I had bills to pay. Over a week later and $105.00 worth of NSF bank charges (with more possible) I still don't have the money they should not have taken. I guess my next option is to take legal action.

As this Tom was told when he signed up, initial dues and fees are taken immediately, and subsequently on or about the 18th of each month thereafter, unless the member cancels.  The member had to agree to this or we would not have done it.

If your are the executive director as you say then why is it that when I called today to request to speak to you to cancel my insurance plan that the customer service representative at your company says he never heard of you and you were not in their company phone directory. He also told me to go to cancel@hccua.org and that is also bogus I will be sending all the info and comments that I have read here on this site to the State Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau and the State Fraud Department unless I recieve my refund back in full in my account, your representative has my information.

I went to the website.  Looks like a credit union. I don't get it.
 Reply
Rating: +1 Compliance guy - 14 Apr 2008
No, it's not a credit union, its an Association, of which some of the institutional members are credit unions, which allows the association to offer as one of its benefits, access to credit union services.

Duz,

Because we have Credit Union in the name of our Association, that can be confusing. We are not a credit union, but we do have strategic alliances with several credit unions (e.g., the IBM Southeast Employees Federal Credit Union, Delta Community Credit Union, and others). When some one becomes a Member of HCCUA, they are also enrolled in the credit union of their choice at no fee and can enjoy all of the financial benefits that come from being a Member of that organization, as well.

Pan american life may be a reputable company but the coverage is so bad its almost to hard to believe. You might want to point out to prospects that if they need open heart surgery.or thier child gets leukemia, the MOST your BEST plan might pay is $15,000.

This is a Limited Benefit Plan.  It is NOT major medical nor is it as good.  If you can get major medical you should, but our programs are designed for those who are either uninsurable or who simply cannot afford major medical prices.  It's a scaled down program which is available to everyone and which is affordable.
 Reply
Rating: 0 Jacquie Damgaard, HCCUA Exec Director - 10 Sep 2008
Wright,

Defined benefit insurance programs are specifically designed for individuals and families who can no longer afford major medical coverage. It is, therefore, unfair to compare them to a major medical policy. The benefits are clearly and specifically defined at the time of enrollment to HCCUA. If an individual has a major medical policy, we strongly encourage them to keep it.  These plans, however, are a blessing for the many families who would otherwise have to go without ANY medical insurance coverage.

I would like to know about the problems people are having when they cancel. There are a lot of unhappy peaple in this blog. It should be a simple process and there are no excuses for taking money from peoples checking accounts when they have cancelled. From the blog, it kinda looks like you have a pattern. It makes me wonder as I am looking for health coverage.

The number of issues is normal for the number of members (about 25,000) that we have. Cancellation and any other issues are dealt with on a routine basis.  There has never been a sanction against this company by any state's department of insurance.  The vast majority of our members are satisfied.

RUN KC!! RUN!!!  THEY DONT PAY FOR ANYTHING.  I HAVE SO MANY MEDICAL BILLS, AND COLLECTION AGENCIES FOR WHAT THEY CLAIMED THEY WOULD PAY. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CHEAPER FOR ME TO JUST EXPIRE THAN FOR ALL THE COST OF THE EMERGENCY ROOM. INTENSIVE CARE WAS THE ICING ON THE CAKE. NOW MY CREDIT IS RUINED, THEY WANT TO TAKE MY HOUSE,, AND I GOT A DEATH SENTENCE THAT SIMPLE SHOTS COULD REVERSE, BUT THEY DONT COVER INTERFERON..  RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN.  ITS CHEAPER TO PAY OUT OF POCKET.

I so agree with you on what HCCUA pays and what it won't pay. I have a stack of doctor bills and no way to pay them (this is not what I signed on for). Any bill that has been paid was only a small partial payment and the larger amount ends up in my lap. Not only are their payments limited but so are the doctors and the outpatient services. I know this is not a MAJOR MEDICAL PLAN but it seems to me they could offer a little more in their out patient services, a wider range of doctors and a better co-pay/deductible plan. Part of the reason I took out this policy was because I thought I could select any doctor I needed to see (within the network)and I would not be stuck with high doctor bills and co-pays. It's time to start looking for newer and better insurance. This company does not live up to it's claims.

Lainie,

Your coverage was explained to you upon enrollment, given to you in detail when you received your Member's Handbook, and is also listed in detail on our website at www.hccua.org. We are continually looking for ways to increase our Member benefits and, in fact, have made a number of additions over the past several months. However, if this coverage is not what you need and you can afford more extensive coverage, we would fully and enthusiastically support you obtaining that coverage.

It is important to put these "complaints" in the context of the thousands of Members that we do have who are very satisfied with our Member Services and accounting departments. Jim,

I am surprised and confused by your comment.  We have no law suits pending and no unresolved issues with any state agency or department of insurance that I am aware of, and I assure you that I would know! SO -what "court" are you referring to? (I fear that it is the "court" of misinformation.)

Blogs like this offer a wonderful way for people who would normally not get a chance to know one another to share information and ideas. The one concern that I have with blogs is that any individual can post/assert anything they want with no process for accountability as to the accuracy of what they are saying. This can be very misleading to those who are reading it and assuming that what folks are saying is true.

I invite anyone with concerns about HCCUA to contact me personally at (866) 258-6930 and I will be happy to answer any questions and clarify any confusions or misinformation.
