Got this call today. Called saying my electric company, Met-Ed, was delivering a free energy savings kit to anyone who would like it. Already knew my name and address. Asked me if my house uses gas, propane, electric, etc for my heater, because a heater whistle would be included in the kit. I was very stand-offish to the woman who called, mainly because of her accent and my distrust, but she didn't ask any personal questions and just ended the call saying my kit would arrive in 4-6 weeks. I'll report back if I'm somehow charged by my electric company for the kit.

    MetEd Call 2
I received an e-mail from MetEd awhile ago about an energy savings kit. I never got around to sending in for it. I moved to this address just a few months ago, but at my old address, we had gotten one of the kits. It had those UV bulbs, some light sensor nightlights, and a couple other things. Supposed to bring your electric bill down or encourage you to be more energy conscious.

Received a call from this number but, as with most of you, didn't answer because the number was unknown to me. They hung up as soon as the answering machine picked up. Interesting thing is that I found this info on one of the other call/complaint forums:

I got a call today and they said that they were from Met-Ed and that I was entitled to a free enery saving kit which included some UV bulbs, some light sensor nightlights, and literature to bring your electric bill down and encourage you to be more energy conscious.  I asked if this was free to every Met Ed customer why wouldn't they simply send them to all customers and she said they #1, not everyone wanted them and #2 they wanted to make sure that we are permitted to receive packages at our address on file for our bills as some do not and they would be simply returned and they did not want to waste resources.  Sounds legitimate.  We shall see what they actuall send.

I suggest you call MetEd (or your electric provider)using the number on your latest bill  to verify anything with this caller - or accepting anything from them!!   ---just to be safe - it could be legitimate but there are many scammers using a "lower your rate"  pitch.

Just rec'd a hangup call from this number with Caller ID listed as UNAVAILABLE.  I don't live in a MetEd service area, but my electric provider and MetEd are both subsidiaries of FirstEnergy Corp.  I called Customer Service and verified that they do offer energy conservation kits and they do use telephone contacts to promote them.  I suggested that their phone campaign would work much better if they identified themselves on Caller ID.

This happened to me as well. I said I didn't want the kit. The man had an accent, maybe English, and told me he was calling from Penelec offering the same kit. I said no I did not want it and he said are you sure, it is already paid for and included in your service I still said no and he told me to have a good day and hung up. What should I do? He knew my name and that I had penelec and probably my address too...

Accept nothing from cold callers. It's a ploy designed to gain access to your personal and financial information. NOTHING is free, there'll be a catch somewhere. Best off ignoring unknown numbers entirely. If you receive something, either refuse it. You're not obligated to pay for something you DID NOT order or ask for.

Oh, if this is the free energy savings kit, it is legit. It's paid for by some grant or whatever but they send a bunch of lightbulbs, night lights and a furnace whistle to let you know when your filter needs changed.  I got one of these at our last house and it was great with no ramifications afterwards.  I should have answered the phone but am always leary of unknown numbers...hopefully they call back!
