888-385-0228 called from IRS saying I had committed tax fraud and I needed to call immediately to avoid a big legal mess. If I don't the local authorities will be contacted by IRS and I will be prosecuted.

I just received the same exact message.  It was a recording and the woman had an ascent.  Definitely a scam.

I am an attorney and just called the number back as my client received a phone call.  They answered and asked who I was representing .  When I let them know I was an attorney and representing everyone that they have already called as they are fraudulent, they hung up on me. Do not call them back and do not speak with them.  They will give you an IRS badge number to seem legitimate but will use a name such as John Smith and they all have non-american accents.

I received the same  phone call from a woman with a definite eastern accent. Left badge number 032857 and asked to speak to me by my proper first name. Wanted a call back. Fat chance that I would call!

I live in northern Indiana and received the same call at 10:11am on June 30, 2014 in an east Indian accent, leaving the following message on my answering machine [broken English or unintelligible words in brackets]:

"Hello I'm calling you from the legal affairs at the U.S. Department of Treasury, that is Internal Revenue Service. We were trying to reach you in regards to a very important issue. The very second you receive this message we need you or your [representing] attorney of record to return the call. We have a legal application concerning a tax fraud on your name, so before the issue ends up into a legal mess, call us back at 1-888-385-0228. I repeat, it's 1-888-385-0228. Don't disregard this message and do return the call. If for any reason you fail to call us back, we will be forced to contact the local authorities and register the case against you. So hopefully we'll [satisfy] this matter as quick as possible. Thanks. For ready reference call us back at 1-888-385-0228."

They never used my name, and I never called them back.

Hopefully this will be helpful to others searching for this.

The exact same message as Matt described was left on my answering machine on Monday morning June 30 at my home in Washington State. I made a recording of it and emailed it to friends to warn them of the fraud. The caller did not use my name and I did not call back. The phone rang again about 20 minutes later but no message was left.
I had another call on Tuesday afternoon July 1 from a guy with a heavy east Indian accent. When he asked for me by name, I asked him who was calling. He said "Mike Smith" and muttered something about IRS. I laughed at him and told him that he didn't sound like any Mike Smith that I know. I told him his scam is all over the local news and that he is a criminal, then I hung up on him.

I got this call from (888) 385-0228. An Indian or Pakistani accent, asked  about my wife whom he accused of Tax Fraud. He knew my wife's name and mine and even recited my address, (must be getting it from phone book). The call came in at 9:45 am on July 3rd. Beware what you give them.

I received this call today. The IRS would most likely contact you first by mail not by a sketchy phone call in which the person does not refer to you by name. I am sure also caller ID would show up as IRS not a private call. Unfortunately, people fall for these calls and get into a whole mess of trouble. Word of advice - be cautious and on your guard.

I first received a phone call from a202 -239-5657 the man had a heavy Indian accent he told me the same thing as the other posts are written, he told me that I was being investigated for tax fraud and heaven help me if I did not cooperate with him. I then asked him if he was from the IRS he needed to tell be my social security number. He told me that they don't give out that kind of information over the phone and I told him no what a minute that is what I say if you ask me for my number. Please get your story straight before you call next time. Well tonight I got the 888-385-0228 phone call and the same story I just kindly told him I will be in D.C. this week and will drop by his office. He keep saying to take him on please, so finally I hung up on him.
