    Stephen,
You said you didn't hear from them again for a year? What did they do after a year? They are claiming my wife owes 5-star bank $10K and we've never heard of them. I guess we'll get a lawyer.

I may have received a call from these folks while I was on vacation, claiming I owe 5K on a credit card that I cut up 12 years ago. They began to call my wife at our home, and then called her on her work number, demanding my work number and threatening to sue for the amount. I will soon have an opportunity to talk to them, and plan on sending them a cease communication letter when I can find out where to send it. This account was paid off years ago, and even if it was not, it is now a time-barred account, meaning they have no legal recourse to sue. It is also against the law to threaten to sue on a time-barred account, as well as harangue my wife at work.

F them.  The Statue of Limitations expired on this account seven years ago.  There website says that if they have the account then it has already been through two other collection agencies. We know that the collection agencies pay pennies on the dollars for noncollectable accounts. If they are the third ones to buy it...imagine how little they paid!!!

I havent seen a call from them that I know of but I've gotten a second letter from them in about a year claiming I owe 516.28 on an old At&t wireless account.  I have NEVER had an At&t wireless account in my name.  We currently have At&t which we pay every month by auto debit  and it's in my husbands name so I have no idea what they are talking about.   I plan on calling Mr. Samuel Wiser at ext 3460 to tell them they have the wrong person.  I don't  expect it to work so I'm sure I'll get another letter from them.

They claimed to be a Legal Office. Same thing saying I owe money on a Citi bank account that I never had.
They also claimed to have mailed letters to my house and now they are taking legal action and now it's too late.  How convenient for these [***].   (Of course they never put anything in writing)

I have been getting these scams for years.  Just received an ARA letter for an account I never had in a state I lived in 35 years ago. I have a refund due from the FHA, the ARA settle amount is very close to the refund amount. Interesting.    Called some of these crooks previously, it is a waste of a phone call.
I called the bank listed and had a conversation with a very nice lady who had no record of me, but told me these companies buy old written off loans for pennies on the dollar. If they collect one out of a hundred they make money.  In my case they found a similar, but not exactly correct, name and went after me.  If you insist on talking to them, tell them you will only deal with the original lender. A legitimate collection agency should have no problem with that.
After a few years of this, I just ignore them.  The letters they send are sent first class, hardly an official proof of delivery.  There is also no law that you speak to anyone on the phone, even if they were legitimate.    Just check your credit periodically and be very careful not to tell these bottom dwellers anything which will open up an old debt, even one which is incorrect.

If you don't believe you owe the debt, ask them to verify it in writing.  If you get no satisfaction, file a complaint with your state's Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection.

You don't have to get a lawyer - they are a collection agency.  They tried to start by telling me that Citibank was going to take me to court for a 15 year old credit card debt.  Just hang up on them - they bought the debt and are trying to collect.  Nothing will happen.
