- monnie| 2 replies888-512-0696 keeps calling from blocked number but they leave a message stating they are from legal support services and they need to confirm my address to serve me with the claim filed against me. they even give some formal claim number. Have no clue what this is.
- Caller: legal support services
- Alfalfa replies to monnieHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - Scott| 2 repliesJust got a call from this blocked number. They say they are legal support services but it was difficult to understand them. They rattled off some claim number and told me that I was "Officially notified'.
The main thing that makes this suspicious is they had my last name correct, but were completely off on my first name. I guess if it really is a debt collector for my medical claims, it is under the wrong name. - Mike-in-MD replies to ScottA phone call is not "legal notification" of anything especially if the message is recorded. If you have medical bills due, contact whomever provided the services to you as to whom you should be dealing with for payments and deal only with them.
- WolfmanJack replies to ScottAny time the words "Officially notified' are used it is a sure sign of a criminal attempting to scare you into paying a bill that you might not even owe. Please carefully read Alfalfa's excellent post as he has provide you with the information you need to prevent you from being scammed by a criminal in this matter.
- rlaReceived a call earlier today with no caller id but caller left a message to call back to this number. Supposedly that there was a claim filed against me and left a claim number. On the message they stated they were the processing service department and that I had an opportunity today to avoid any further action and also to discuss the allegations.
- Caller: cka firm
- VickieAlso received a call from this # asking for my adult son (on my cell ... not sure how they would have my cell #). They left same info as others received ... that this was 'the firm' and that they needed my son to contact them regarding a claim (at first it sounded like a positive thing). Then further in the message it was claim 'against' him and that he had 12 - 24 hours to contact 'the firm' and also used the term 'allegation'. This came from an unidentified # on caller ID but this phone # was left to return the call (along with a claim #). If it's a bill collector, it's not a 'CLAIM' nor an 'ALLEGATION' in the sense they are using .. this is a trick to entice someone to return the call. I'm ignoring.
- JohnelleThis number just called my cell phone with the correct first name and wrong last name, stating they were calling regarding an outstanding claim against me. I don't have outstanding anything. They said their name was Tiffany Fox. It can only be a scam.
- LIAMCKS MANAGEMENT ---B.S.
My Son received a call from a "Unknown Number" on his Cell Phone, (How do they get Cell #'s of Relatives ? ) The person Claimed they were looking for me !, and or my younger son. a message was left with a Claim # . I called and gave the "Claim # " and was put on hold, then was asked if I was Jaswun Keliskawa I said NO . I was put on hold
.. Then was asked by my first name only to verify the last 4 of my SS # ... I said NO, give me your company information, Name Address Phone License Number ( they tried To evade all my questions ) I was then told that a "Process Server" could not locate me to Serve me with Litigation paperwork. That was why they contacted my son...WTF
I have no unpaid past due Debt.
Also I have lived in the same location for over 10 yrs. ALL MY JUNK MAIL MAKES IT HERE I'M NOT HARD TO FIND.- Caller: CKS MANAGEMENT
- Melissa replies to monnieDid you ever figure it out, they are harassing my mother but they never call me. Even after I called and left a message with my cell number! They keep telling her that they are going to serve me her daughter with a civil lawsuit!! What is this all about!?? So weird. Pretty sure it's a scam....
- JasonThese are all great posts!! I was also called and fed the same song and dance. All posts are 100% correct. BUT debt collectors have tools to use and find relatives through the consumers SSN. This is legal! For location purposes only. And these tools are highly monitored by all Federal agencies. Also the debt collector has legal right to call anyone somehow connected to the consumer. Always as for as much information possible and give nothing in return until they can prove, in writing that you owe the debt.
- marvaI received a call from this number yesterday. The caller asked if I was marva and asked me to give a message to my son. She said she was calling from the service notification dept at NAPS regarding a claim that was filed against him. She asked that he call the legal dept at NAPS and gave a claim number. She said he didn't have to speak to anyone in particular because "anyone that answers the phone will be able to help him". This number did not show up on my caller ID....just incoming call.
- Caller: NAPS
- ToniaI literally just called asking for their address and they refused to give it to me and hung up on me. I called about 15mins. Prior to find out the details of what they are claiming and they again hung up on me and threatened a court date at me. Claiming they are some law firm with the first call I made. Claiming to be CKA Managment and was able to get the guy's name on the second call, though who knows of its a real name. Name he said his name was Paul Madrid, I could have that spelled wrong.
- Caller: CKA Managment (888) 512-0696
- ErnestJust got a similar call looking for a relative.
Sounds like a scam to me. - Fran| 1 replyGot a voice mail that showed up blank on caller ID - but this # was given to call back. The caller said she was Monica Silva from Legal Support Services. It was in regards to 'allegations' against my oldest step-daughter, and gave a supposed case number and said they had 'papers prepared' to serve on her and that she must return the call. That she should consider herself notified. We had to play it back about 15 times as the woman mumbled so badly. Turns out the younger step-daughter got an identical voice mail from the same mumbling woman. Scam, much?
- Caller: Legal Support Services
- CWG40 replies to FranYes, pretty much a total scam. Just a debt collector trying to scare someone into actually paying them something. Debt collectors do not handle "allegations" or "claims.'. They collect debts. Usually the debts are questionable or in some cases non-existent.
A phone call is not legal notice of anything.
Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a DIME until the debt is validated.
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.
If they are bothering you,
Report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now. If you can find them. - CWG40ID themselves as CK & A Long history of debt scamming on 800notes.
