Two calls, both said it was from US CENSUS BUREAU. It gave a case number and asked for a call back.  Did not return call.

First caller was male with Indian accent.  Second caller was female with Asian accent.  Accent so thick I was unable to record the case number.

    I did return the call.
It is the legit number for the US Census Bureau.
They are doing a random survey in preparation for 2020 census.
No trick Q's, just confirming 2010 data, address, number in household, etc.

Confirming Pete's information listed on 8/25/2015 above. This is the Hagerstown Census Bureau Office. If in doubt, can call 1-800-555-1212 and ask for Hagerstown, MD Census Bureau office and they will provide same number and you can call them and provide the case number. No questions asked that could be considered PII other than full name (i.e, no birthdate, birthplace, mother maiden name, etc.). Person stated that this was an added mandatory sampling to confirm/clarify the information provided via card through the mail.

I received a call she said it was from the U.S. Census Bureau, she left a case number and a phone number to call back.  I received the phone call on Sunday Morning, at 10:00 AM.  I had already filled out a survey form through the mail and I do not believe that the U.S. Census Bureau works on a Sunday Morning.  I also had to play the recording back 4 times to understand the phone number.  Too many red flags, I did not call back.

We received a call, I called back and explained that I do not want to participate as I already received a Thank You email for completing the U.S. Census Bureau. They put a note in my case file. Then she said that they may call back. I replied if the case I will not call them back as I'm not required to by law.  Like Cal mentioned within this message board too many red flags.

I called back.  It's the Census Bureau.  The rep explained that it's a follow up on the previous survey forms, which is why people who already filled out the survey are getting the calls.  Makes sense to me.  I gave them my case number and they knew who I was, so I wasn't divulging any sensitive information.  Seems to me some people are awfully touchy about being asked to do any extra effort.  But effective surveys / questionnaires don't come out of thin air - they have to be tested on SOMEBODY.

Ernie on 8 Oct 2015 is correct.  However, I took the same tact as John Doe on 7 Oct 2015.  My main beef is that the call-back was clearly to a foreign call center.  With all the people looking for work in this country, I am furious that the Census Bureau is using tax dollars to "outsource" their work.  FWIW, I will be writing to my Congressman about this.

Called the number after reading remarks. They confirmed who lived in the house and asked a bunch of dumb race questions.

We've been warned repeatedly on TV not to respond to any calls from the Census Bureau because they'll always contact you by mail.  No wonder we're skeptical.  Mine was a robocall from an 800 number asking me to call them back at an 888 number.

Received a message on my answering machine after at least two weeks of at least 4 hang-up calls every week day.  Accent so thick, I thought the person was speaking Spanish. After listening to the message several times, I was able to discern the callback number (888-595-1328) and the words "case number" and an 8 digit number, but that was all.  I won't call back.

I got return call from this number after I called 800-972-5650. I told them I didn't wish to participate because I already returned one in mail. They told me I would be penalized. They also said I would be the "voice of many".  Told them that I wouldn't want anyone else to speak on my behalf. I was given the supervisor and he stated that when someone wasn't satisfied that then they were given a supervisor who would say "no", but that wasn't the case and that I had to participate. I asked them to send me the questions in the mail and they refused. How can this be legitimate. Am having it investigated.

US Government Agencies DO NOT Call on the phone abour forms and surveys,.   Everything is sent US Mail.  I read all the previous posts.  IF you filled out the form they (census burear)  have all the information needed.  I believe it is a scam for you to pay telephone charges or to  get more intormation for a future scam. Think about the questions and the hassle you get if you refuse.  Also  why the accents.??   scammers or spammers.   DO not give them anything and than block their number.

I kept getting calls from the Census Bureau.  Like many, I was skeptical.  I looked them up here --> http://www.census.gov/about/contact-us/regions.html and called the Hagerstown Telephone Center (HTC) (240) 420-6006.

They did confirm my case number and I took a 7-minute follow-up survey.

Hopefully they will stop calling me now.

    great granny
Been getting LOTS of calls leaving this # (888-595-1328) and a case ID#. Some have accents but always the same message. I returned my form weeks ago. It seems like all these folks have been given the same list of numbers which is why I get so many messages from so many various phone numbers asking me to call the census bureau. No thanks. Also it's hard to block the calls since they are from so many different numbers.

It's not that we're being asked to do more, it's that the person calling has such a heavy accent that I couldn't understand her. It is suspicious. I was asked to clarify how white I am and was asked several different ways that I was the only family at my address. The US Census Bureau is suspicious of our answers. It does offend me.
