I got a call twice in the last five minutes. I tried to answer the first time and the line was dead. I answered the second time and there was a recorded message telling me my Visa debit card was temporarily deactivated and I needed to press 1 to speak to the "security department". Funny thing, I don't own a visa debit card. Smells like a SCAM to me. When I called the number back the message said it was a company called Freedom Debt.

Scams like this often make outboud calls under the mask of a ligitimate company and phone number. Anyone with an ISDN line or even certain VOIP lines can put any caller id information they want on outbound calls. Scammers use this to look legitimate.

Don't blame the ligitimate company, they were not involved.

There's a lot of these scammers posing as other companies to try to get your information. I feel sorry for the consumers scammed and the companies they are impostering.

The caller ID on my cell phone just said "710," and it was a recording that said my Suntrust card was deactivated due to "unauthorized use by a third party" and to press 1 to talk to their "security department." I do have an account with Suntrust, but I am almost dead positive they don't have my cell number.

Also, Suntrust has called me before on other phones for various things and they never use a vague recording; a human always contacts me. In addition, Suntrust usually sends me an email about any issues before they call. I even checked my account online just in case and everything looks fine. Suntrust is usually really good about letting me know when fishy stuff is going on.

So wtf? Must be a scam.

The only thing that kind of weirds me out is, how did these scammers know my cell phone number and know that the person with that number uses Suntrust? I have given few companies my cell number, and none that I think would sell my info. Maybe it was just a wild guess on their part that turned out to be right?

I got this same number on my cell phone caller id yesterday, however I did not answer it. I am glad I was able to find other people out here that experienced the same as myself.
