They have been calling me [***] early in the morning for a debt that is not mine.  I dont answer 888 numbers, but after they keep calling I finally answered and there was a pause because a machine calls you, I waited on hold for a little for the next rep.  They said they are collecting a debt for "So in SO", I told them I was not that person.  They said sorry and hung up, but I still keep getting phone calls from this number.  Really angering me.  I have told them twice it's not me.

They've called five or six times, only once a day, early in the am.  My phone rings once, then it hangs up.  No message, no nothing.  It's a new number for me, and I get tons of calls for the previous owner of this number, so I'm assuming it's for her, Cheryl Carr (spelling?).  I don't answer, and if they won't leave a message, I won't phone back.

get calls from this number  1-888-799-7986 asking for steve deutch (sp) to my cell phone.  These calls have occurred for over 3 yrs and I have requested information several times. Seems it is Astra Business services, A Collection agency that uses staff from India to make calls.  The really funny part is that they are calling my cell phone which is a pay by useage phone (tracFone)that I have owned for about 4 years.  Evidently the person they are looking for had the phones number in the past and let it lapse.  Now they keep calling me.  I finally contacted them and informed them that if I get any more calls I would report them to the FCC for their illegal practices. http://www.astraglobal.com/work.htm

That's so funny, all my calls are for Suzanne Carr, I am NOT Suzanne.  Must be something that runs in the Carr family that they don't want to pay bills.

Been getting calls for Lucy Jensen, who I don't know and have never heard of, for almost 3 years, off and on. I've had this number for almost 6 years. I tell them constantly that they have a wrong number and they usually hang up. Today I actually spoke at length with the rep, explaining that they will never reach Lucy Jensen by dialing this number. They even tried to tell me they left a message with an actual person a week ago at this number. I am the only person who uses this phone, and it's a work-provided cell number. After speaking clearly and using as little profanity as possible to get my point across, the lady finally said "alright sir I'll take care of it" and hung up.

    We'll see.

Under the TCPA, a consumer has a right to file a lawsuit and recover $500 for each call that violates the TCPA. The TCPA can also be used in conjunction with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in some situations.

Generally, the TCPA does not apply to debt collectors making collection calls to debtors. However, if you are subjected to calls from a debt collector and you are not the debtor, you may file a lawsuit against the debt collector under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and the TCPA.

This right was recently recognized by Judge Legrome D. Davis in a case called Watson v. NCO Group, Inc.  NCO Group is a debt collector that uses automated prerecorded collection calls.  In this case, Mr. Watson alleged he was getting hundreds of calls from NCO Group after he got a new phone number. Mr. Watson claimed he owed no debt to NCO Group, Inc.  Mr. Watson filed suit under both the FDCPA and TCPA.

    David Israel, defense lawyer for NCO, argued that the TCPA should not apply to debt collectors.  Judge Davis rejected the argument made by David Israel. The judge ruled that Mr. Watson had a right to sue NCO Group Inc under the TCPA for $500 for each call.  Judge Davis wrote;

[The] Court is convinced that a non-debtor's rights are in fact violated when he is subjected to repeated annoying and abusive debt collection calls that he remains powerless to stop.

Judge Davis' ruling was based upon his interpretation that collection calls to non-debtors violate the privacy rights provided by the TCPA.

So what can you do if you receive "wrong number" calls from debt collectors?

    1. Sign up for the Do-Not-Call registry.
    2. Save the calls captured by your voice mail or answering machine.
    3. Contact a consumer lawyer.

I got a call from this number every morning for 3+ weeks, but they never left a message, and I don't answer numbers I don't recognize.  They finally DID leave a message for one Ms. Cheryl Carr.  I called back and asked for Mr. Harry Smith (that's the name he left) at Astro Business something or other, and they're trying to collect a debt.  I told the guy I wasn't Cheryl, and that I'd been inundated with calls for Cheryl since I got the number back in August of '09 and he said that no one from his office would call anymore.  Let's see if that's true.

They just called me, wouldn't tell me where they were calling from and kept asking me for my social security number. When I refused to give them my information the person became aggressive and I had to tell him repeatedly never to call again. They are apparently a HUGE SCAM!!

The only way to stop creditors from bugging you is to cancel your phone service. Get a cell phone or use email as your soul means of communicating from the home and give these only to you friends! If you are forced to give a way to contact you, officially, give only an email, preferably an inbox that you can change or delete altogether. No law requires you to answer a phone call, much less to even have a phone!

I recently started receiving calls from this number.  My phone rings once and then says I had a missed call.  I called back and they had no record of why they were calling me and then asked for my SS#.  I said there was no way in hell I was giving out my SS# when I don't know who they are.  I guess I'll start keeping a record of when and how many times they call and if it continues I will be taking further action.

They called my house too.  Left a recorded message "don't hang up, blah, blah, blah".  Must be for former owner's of my number.  If you call them back you can tell them to put you on the "do not call list" and tell them that if they don't, you will sue them for harrassment.
