Called a distant relative on the opposite side of the family asking for information on my deceased grandmother. Also stated thata money was owed and they are trying to collect a debt.

I too am pretty sure this is a scam as my grandmother has been deceased for over two years and all outstanding debts have been paid. Plus, this company (aka Century Point) stated that this relative they called is on a "contact sheet" and I know this is not true. Like I stated they called a distant relative, from the ohter side of the family. THis relative is my grandmothers son's wifes sister. Yeah!

Everyone out there please be careful! Never give information on the phone. Always aks and gather as much information as you can find and research whatever information you are given.

Thank you to the original poster!

This company called trying to reach a representative or family member of my recently deceased father.
They were trying to get in touch with someone who is handling his estate.

This came as shocking news since I wasn't aware that my father had died. I called my father and he is alive.

    This definitely sounds like scam.

I know someone who received one of these calls after the death of a spouse. I called the number back and spoke to a lady who told me their company is Ascension Point.   http://www.ascensionpoint.com/ they are a collection agency basically for creditors. So in essence they are trying to collect on a believed debt in the deceased persons name most likely. Since they are connected to the financial world in their collection process and records they have access to they can find easily through public records when some one passes away. You can try the link above which will take you to their company sight. The lady also said if you will tell them to remove your phone number from their list they will, which does sound accurate to most states rules and laws governing bill collectors. Hope this helps.

Just received letter from AscensionPoint  (Christina Mallen) addressed to my mother's estate regarding "paying outstanding bills".  That's interesting, since I have personally contacted all her creditors regarding changing/updating  account information. Just finished reading all the comments re: the 888-806-9074, and 888-420-2510-listed for the same company. Thankyou! I was about to contact AscensionPoint tomorrow--don't think so.  The State Attorney General is high on my list tho.  What a scam!.

I have been receiving calls from this number for three weeks.  I finally spoke to a caller "Patty" today who informed me she was from Ascension Point.  The calls are about my deceased exhusband's widow (I was his first wife).  When asked if I was the contact for her affairs, I asked what kind of company or organization Ascension Point is.  They "handle the affairs of deceased peope."  I asked if they were lawyers, a bank, a government agency all of which got the answer "no."  I asked again what kind of a group they were and was given the same reply as above.  I told them I would tell them nothing without more information.  The response was "Ma'am, have nice day" and she hung up on me.  I'm interested to see if I get more calls.

Received a call this morning from my husband's uncle.  He stated that "Vanessa Ranger" was calling about my deceased father-in-laws debt.  "Vanessa" stated that she wanted information regarding who was in charge of settling the estate of my father-in-law.  I know this is a scam, because why are they not calling my mother-in-law or husband about this?  Why would they call my husbands uncle?  Thankfully we are people of sound mind over here.

Yesterday, I received a call from (888) 806-9074.  I do not answer calls from unknown numbers or people that I do not know... not unless I have had time to do a reverse look-up on the number.  I read all of the reports on this site and realized that I was dealing with the worst of the worst telemarketers/debt collectors!

I received a call today from (888) 806-9074 and again, this is not the first time that they have tried calling!

I picked up the phone and said, "Good Afternoon!"  There was a short delay from their auto-dialer and a canned message just started when a young lady answered.

"Hello," she said, "I am trying to reach the person authorized to speak on the behalf of the recently deceased (Named My Father Who Just Died) are you authorized to speak on his behalf concerning important information?"  She asked with intensity!

I replied, "OH... your the folks who calls pretending to have money and or pretends to be collecting some unpaid fictitious debt... I looked up your company and read the hundreds of complaints that have been posted about you guys... what do you want?" I asked politely!

She then asked again, "Are you authorized to speak on the behalf of (Names My Dad Who Just Died Again) because I have important information!"

I cheerfully replied, "I have a question for you... what kind of underwear do you have on?"

The young lady angrily replied, "Sir... I am going to terminate this call!" as she hung up on me!

Folks... my father just died.  He lived over 500 miles away.  There are no debts.  There is no reason for these people to be calling me.  A legitimate company would first send a letter to the deceased's address.  In theory, that letter would be forwarded to the executor of the estate.

The company that called me did not practice polite business techniques when contacting me.  Most people do not know how to make business calls and this company violated every rule in the book.  I already knew what kind of company that I was dealing with before they called and the lack of business professionalism by the employee was shocking!

Repeated calls from companies that are using fictitious caller ID's like the company using 888-806-9074 should be a warning to the reader to avoid this company at all costs.  Do not give this company information!

Do not be polite with these people... why should you be polite?

That's what they are counting on and it is how they prey on the weak.  It is how they get you to listen to their lies.  It is how they get their foot into your home.  It is how they earn your trust.  Don't trust these people... you could lose everything!

Again, don't be polite with these people.  You don't have to be rude.  You don't have to yell or get mad.  But you can have fun with them... if you have the time...  keep them on the phone as long as possible.  Make their phone call cost them precious time.  Remember time means money to these folks!

If you want to learn how to deal with debt collectors look up the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act at:

    http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpa/fdcpact.shtm

Knowledge is power and the more informed you are, the better position you will be in dealing with companies that routinely violate the law.

If you need to deal with telemarketers, you can learn more at:

    https://www.donotcall.gov/

The state in which you live has laws that deal with debt collectors and telemarketers.  Don't hesitate to file complaints with your State Attorney Generals office!

Google, "The Anti-Telemarketing Program" which does offer some good advice as well.  The main point is don't be intimidated by companies that are so willing to violate your rights of privacy, violate the laws of your State and violate Federal laws, rules and regulations!

Legitimate companies already have the information they need... they won't be calling somebody like you or me who lives hundreds or thousands of miles away!

In closing, I am not offering legal advice.  I am not telling you what to do.  I am just sharing what little knowledge and experience that I have with these companies and I do know more than you might realize!

I don't want to see you get hurt be these Rip-Off Scam Artists... who use fictitious phone numbers.  (Yes... I called the number back and was hung-up on several times!)

Please be careful dealing with people who call your home!

    Take care,

This company now calls itself Ascension Point Recovery Services, LLC. I got a somewhat generic letter (3 weeks after my mother passed) expressing sympathy and "Please have the person who is responsible for paying the outstanding bills from the decedent's estate contact our office. We can be reached toll free at (888) 806-9074 for more information." I'm sure they'r just scanning the obits and they do catch some unsuspecting people who fall for this. But yes, this IS A SCAM!!!

Question for all:  Was your deceased family member on Hospice Care?  I got a call from these people today, which I did not answer.  Having read all these posts, I suspect they are calling about my mom, who is on Hospice Care, but she hasn't died yet!  I wonder if Hospice is selling contact numbers.

Uh oh, I got a call from them about my ex. We've been divorced 15 years or more. I gave them the address of his widow, I hoope this does not cause problems for her. I thought she might be owed from some insurance or something, not that they were calling about a debt. Sorry, KM. (I just sent her a note about this.)
