- ashley| 3 repliesI got a letter in the mail with this phone number in it. It says my student loan info was stolen and I should enroll with Experian to have someone watch my credit for a year
- Caller: Experian
- Call type: Non-profit organization
- mary| 2 repliesI received this same letter, from ECMC is this for real and should we trust this site
- Ruth replies to ashleyI received the same letter. The url address that was given inside of the letter did not specify what needed to be done. I had an activation code to receive a triple alert status in your credit report. I understand that when you report identity theft to one credit bureau then all three will be notified. I think once you place you personal debit or credit information online that give them a right to bill you for membership fees each month.
- Ruth replies to maryI do not know what to tell you about that one. If you have an activation code to receive a free credit report with them what we probably need to do is keeping looking for the right url site to input that specific code or keep the letter for your records. You need to follow the rules on reporting identity theft and file a police report if you find anything on their that should not be. Keep that letter for you records becouse if you are a student than something probably has happened whereas there was a theft of data.
- PitaI would NOT do anything with them. Normally, the company whose system was broken into will pay for the enrolment with Experian to have someone watch your credit for a year and you do not have to do anything.
Why is Experian calling-mailing you? You should have been notified by the bank handling your student loan or your college.
At least two of those moronic credit companies own 'protection' companies... remember the dumb guy singing in the fish fry place--- junky car, huge cell phone, living in basement because of g/f's bad credit?
Contact the bank from which you received the student loan, check with your college to see if there has been a breech of their computers' security. You could also go to your local TV station-- sounds like a good human interest story.
Ashley, the credit companies are most certainly FOR PROFIT. Government says we get one free report a year and others are to be paid for.
Be careful and good luck.- Caller: 888-829-6549 - Experian

- CLTNorth Carolina replies to ashleyI went to the NC Dept of Justice site, using Bing to search, rather than typing in the address provided in the letter from ECMC. I am distrustful as well, concerned that scammers can mimic company's website easily. So I went searching on my own and found a reference to the breach and ECMC on the DOJ website. http://www.ncdoj.com/News-and-Alerts/News-Rel ... ’-data-sto.aspx
I would recommend you do your own research, validate, but if you have been a victim of a breach, it's better to be protected than to have someone get your information. - Robin replies to maryI received that same old stupid letter. I went to the web site and I put the information in that it was calling for and it said unable to identify you. I don't trust this letter and I don't think it is for real. The more I read it the dummer it sounded. First thing; it has a P.O. box. I think any ligitimate letter will not becoming from a P.O. box. Second thing is; what is ECMC? What does the letters stand for? Third thing is; if there was a breach in their computer systems, why should we sign up for anything? Its on them.
After it wouldn't take my information, that's what started me to really think. Not that it didn't look funny from the beginning. - Lee| 1 replyReceived the same letter today. Don't trust this one! Obviously some kind of
scam to scare us. Find it odd they would be sending me a letter since I
graduated decades ago and am now retired!
Correct number I have from my bank as of last year for Experian is 888-397-3742. - Zythum replies to LeeReceived the letter as well and the same holds true. I graduated a long time ago and the loans have also been paid off. What is a company doing holding information for so long? Tried to google the phone number in the letter and nothing comes up for Experian, you are right their number is 888-397-3742. Found additional information on the data thefts which says that the CD's containing the information were recovered and that they were encrypted CD's.
- PaulThe stolen data was recovered. Suspect is in custody. The ECMC website has an update about it. The North Carolina Dept of Justice also has an update in their News release tab.
www.ecmc.org or www.ncdoj.gov - CharI don't much doubt the legitimacy of this specific case, but their instructions are appalling and risky. This letter from ECMC gives you a website and validation code to log into and enroll for the complimentary Triple Alert service. The website form then asks you ALL YOUR PRIVATE PRECIOUS DATA -- full legal name, social security number, etc.!!! I couldn't believe it. Any scammer could impersonate ECMC or another company like that and simply ask the naive sucker to input their SSNs and other private data... Come on, who was the brilliant [***] at consumerinfo.com or Experian that came up with this means to register people for Triple Alert? They should have sent us a special identify code that would avoid having us use our SSNs.
- parduke replies to ashleyI got the letter as well. Never had a student loan. Have been retired for several years. Not getting my information!
- AnnieI received the same letter and found the following letter on Experian's web site about these sorts of letters. This is a legitimate site and offer. These sites do need to gather your personal data in order to verify your identity to start protecting it, they do this using encryption to protect the data during transit.

- Rita| 1 replyI have had the same letter and it looked like a scam of some type to me but I went to Trans Union,
Equafax, and Experian and put a block and a security freeze and fraud alert and identy theft protection on all of the credit agencies. Just to be on the safe side. I have been dealing with ECMC for three years now because of two student loans that I had 12 years ago. They also stole my taxes worth over $2,000.00 with notifing me. I complained everywhere: The White House, The Congress, The US Department of Education, The Civil Rights Department, Federal Aid, FBI, and on facebook. I exposed them every which way I could! In hopes that someone would notice and stop those scammers! The best option is if you do still have student loans with them and are in trouble with ECMC is to consolodate with William D. Ford Foundaton, or Direct Loans the are directly under the US Department Of Education so if you consolodate with them than ECMC will not be able to mess with you. You do still have to watch your back because they could still try to take you to court or try to collect from you some way and protect your identy! They are crooks, federal felons, tax frauders, embezzeler, and larcenist to the max! They need to be shut down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- Caller: 800-780-7997

- lady replies to RitaHow about the fact that they do not have authority with their incorporating state to be doing business as "ECMC".
